Welcome back, man! Very excited to know your thoughts? How would you rank the three Larrain actresses-as-historical figures (and feel free to throw in the actual best, Stella Gonet in El Conde, if you feel so inclined). I really like the movie, it captures the essence of La Callas (Callas the diva) and Maria (Callas the woman) without forcing either persona onto the other. It's not as visually sumptuous as Spencer or as ethereal as Jackie butit doesn't need to be. It's more tragic and grounded than both, even with all the elements of magical realism that are so typical of Larrain. Favino, Rohrwacher and Golino are really good too.
Actresses:
1. Portman 2. Jolie 3. Stewart
and I'm no fan of Portman in general. A LOT of cool people left this board.........can't think of anyone it is better to see back

Angelina is really great in Maria, nomination guaranteed. Seeing the last three episodes of Disclaimer in a couple hours, I'll report back.
PS: Hi back everyone! I've had the most intense months in my life this year, so apologies for the absence.
Do you know when the embargo lifts? In a little over an hour.

I can see angeolena winning with those reactions tbh. The singular notices are very strong and I can definitely see a narrative shaping for her. Problem is, I can see narratives also shaping for other contenders and Jolie already has an Oscar to her name. I do feel this could go the way of Jackie and Spencer where the nomination is the reward (and I am getting flashbacks to those seasons where people thought Portman and Stewart were locked in for the win), but if she takes the Volpi that would be a major boost to her campaign.

I can see angeolena winning with those reactions tbh. Yeah it’s possible but all of Pablo’s leading ladies have gotten notices like this.

Seems critics didn't care for this as much as the other two of the trilogy, but I believe Jolie is still in for the nomination.

Disclaimer: A fantastic miniseries. Perhaps not the masterpiece many are expecting or hoping for, but still a really great work of television. The final episode is truly sublime. Jack Lemmon came back to life through a magnificent, extraordinary Kevin Kline (the clear MVP of the show), Lesley Manville great too, and Leila George is a revelation.

If Kline wins the Emmy - the only other Living Amercan Male Triple Crown winner - since Pacino (2003) - and would tie him as most awarded male TC actor ever (5 wins)

About Blanchett: she doesn’t break any new grounds in the first six episodes, it’s actually quite familiar work from her, but then she gives a masterclass in the finale.

haven’t read the reviews so i’m not sure why it’s getting a mixed to good reception. if i remember correctly, spencer and jackie debuted to pretty good scores after their venice premiere, didn’t they? like above 80 on metacritic. i wonder how this holds up once a wider audience begins to watch and review it. solid chance this lands somewhere in the mid 50’s once it’s all said and done. not counting her out as she’s being raved, but wouldn’t be surprised if she was a fringe nominee due to the movies reception.

Yeah there's almost no way Jolie is winning, and if we get a couple of surprise strong contenders emerge from TIFF/Telluride, she could miss the nom altogether.

Jolie is very likely going to be a standalone nominee for her film (give or take a stray Costume Design nod). A lot of the presumed candidates for Best Actress are in overall stronger films than this. I'm predicting her at this stage but she is by no means safe.

Exactly.
Even just from the performances we've already seen, I'd say she's 4th behind Madison, Gascon and Ronan. And we still have Adams, Gaga, Moore, Jean-Baptiste, Watts, Kidman, Torres etc. to premiere.

Babygirl: Nicole Kidman didn’t lie because this is… one of the boldest performances by an A-list Hollywood actress in the last few decades? It’s truly up there with her best performances. The movie itself is fantastic, it’s the movie Adrian Lyne has always dreamed of making, she and Dickinson make a pair whose chemistry is simply through the roof, and the power dynamics at the center of the film are sensational. As of now, I doubt I’ll find a better female performance at this festival.
