I like it. A "wait for the drama to intensify" kinda movie.
And it does, but the highest intensity I felt was 7.5 kinda intensity and I think I'll stick with that.
Zendaya was fine...probably most people are gonna see it for her. Feels kinda like a just outside the Top 5 of what the awards are gonna ultimately settle with if I had to guess, but she has a lot of dramatic prowess and can definitely mold the tone of a movie/show in her favor. I dunno if this will pick up enough steam tho.
I still maintain that that coked up episode of Euphoria is too much fun for one actor to be having, and at least on TV is where the best stuff of the last 8 years are to be found. With Lange in Feud and all headlining.

I didn't hate it so for me that's a big deal in the Hellscape that is 2024 .......it's certainly more fun than anything Guadagnino has done in a while.....didn't like his Suspria, HATED Bones and All There is a scene in this movie - with Zendaya and O'Connor where they are close to each other - face to face and arguing that made me think "Movies never do this - like play with space like this.........." Empty streets, front seat of a car, "fighting" - they may kiss, she may spit at him, he may assault her .......I was like what a clever way to stage a scene ........ Weird stuff you notice Side note: What would Djokovic think about players smoking and drinking coffee and stuff?

It was insanely watchable trash material elevated to an addictive label thanks to a commited trio of actors, particularly Zendaya, when she wants she can do wonders with just her face, Euphoria obviously is a testament of that but she was still projecting a young girl, in Malcolm & Marie there was potential but that was a one-note movie, here is even kind of refreshing due to her young fanbase that she is showing all those contradictory feelings in such barebones ways. And Guadagino is back on track after the hideous semi-cannibal YA novel, here's a reminder of the pleasure of going to the movies by way of visceral ways to get into the games and negotiations (the way this movie is communicating state of minds caught me by surprise as I don't think I've seen it done this way before, there's a lot of enthusiasm in the audiovisual language) and when things are about to get predictable plotwise, scenes like the one pacinoyes pointed out elevate the stakes. There's barely any dialogue in the decisive last 15 minutes but Guadagnino already stablished his language in such invating ways that every element lands.
Good movie.

Some of the frames reminded me of the beginning of Seven, how the images were cut. I think the Swiss girl player was a bit stereotyped like a mountain farmer, she didn't look like an athlete. In the restroom at the beginning: what's in the tray? Big spoiler for who saw Call me by your name apples or peaches? It's a weird triangle, as she seems not to love any of them, and you wonder if it's only her obsession for being in control that brings her to them. She screams 3 times: life, death and resurrection. On a side note, I broke my knee way worse than her, but I didn't scream at all.

Just fantastic. Easily Luca Guadagnino's most entertaining film to date, and I think overall his best. Loved all three lead performances, especially Josh O'Connor. The last ten minutes was some of the most thrilling cinema I've seen in ages.

After musing about it, and given the Seven frames comparison, I finally had a deeper Fincher parallelism. Like in Fight club, the two guys in Challengers are the same person (like Norton and Pitt) with different attitudes towards tennis and life, and they reunite in the final scene, this being an happy ending instead of the destruction in Fight club though. Zendaya is obviously Marla, and I have never understood if Marla was real or another projection of Norton 's mind.

Mostly liked it. The three main leads are pretty good with O'Connor being the MVP for me. I appreciate Luca G for leaning into the trashy side of the subject and he and his DP some cool things with the camera. Pulpy romance on and off the court. Its also a bit too long and relishes in its own goodies.

So sexy, so fun. Guadagnino and Mukdeeprom go crazy during the last fifteen minutes or so and I loved every second of it. I doubt anyone will release a better score this year either.
With this and his unbelievable work La Chimera, Josh O’Connor is proving himself to be the real deal. A star! Faist and Zendaya are no slouches either.

Really enjoyed this film. All three are soo good. Zendaya really surprised me here, such a star. Not sure if I liked the ending as much but it was certainly quite interesting.

I will say that this film has grown on me the more I’ve had a bit of time to reflect on it and digest it some more. I was a bit mixed on it initially but really feel like it like it more now that I’ve had time to think about it, although I do still feel it was a bit bloated. Looking forward to a rewatch

Challengers....success for the people who cared to see it.
Euphoria... success.
Yeah I get maybe she didn't have much to do with Dune and Spider Man but her fangirls still liked her in them so she reaps the benefit.
Pretty good track record...just saying. Given that Halle Berry had Gothika and Catwoman destroying any chance she had of becoming the most well known black actress of all time like she could've been. And Swordfish is also a midish movie too.

I really enjoyed it - loved Josh O'Connor in the Crown, love him in this. I don't know how I feel about Zendaya (tbh, the entire cast of Euphoria has been overused in the industry lol i've had enough of her, Sweeney, Elordi) - great presence, loved her tennis scenes, and she physically/aesthetically really suited the role but it was either that she was underwritten or that her stank face is over-used and conveys nothing to me (both maybe).
But I dont get the love for this soundtrack - like, my god, it was overpowering at times and took me out of half of O'Connor's scenes.
Anyways, the first 2/3s were amazing. Luca Guadagnino is perfect at capturing drama/suspense - felt like A Bigger Splash. The last third, I'm on the fence about...felt like it lost its steam and purpose with the final match and some of those shots.

It's not quite on the level of Bones and All (which is a near-perfect film if you shave off the final five minutes), but Guadagnino crafts one hell of an experience, deftly weaving between timelines and perspectives with deadly precision. The film has a steady tempo to it, losing the stodginess that affects a lot of Luca's longer films (lookin' at you, Suspiria!). Zendaya gives a ferociously magnetic performance that proves she does have movie-star cred and charisma. I didn't buy the Mike Faist hype with West Side Story but he's quite good here as the more tender-hearted Art. That said, I think Josh O'Connor damn near steals the whole show with his laissez-faire, devil-may-care Patrick.
I do want to ruminate on it a bit more, as I am wondering if the timeline jumps feel like affectation after a bit of time and distance. But for right now, I found myself fascinated, which is something I've never experienced while watching tennis.

An awesome comeback after the fine-but-not-much-more Bones and All. Ferociously entertaining and quite magnificently put together by Guadagnino who's like a brilliant conductor with a club hat on, navigating through borderline Nolanesque temporal shenanigans of the script with the confidence of a seasoned pro and the zest of a feisty youngster. The way he approaches sports, relationships, bodies, food, etc. is so textural, so palpably alive... it's just great. And how terrific is it that the whole thing leads to a triumphantly staged, nail-biting final showdown? And that such a classical sports movie idea can be so modernly vibrant in its execution? Never expected Guadagnino to go quite this flashy (in the best way, of course - I'm sure the tennis sequences were heavily influenced by how Scorsese tackled pool in The Color of Money) but that's what's so terrific about the movie - it's like an energized grand opera all the way through with its finale going for and hitting the highest note possible. Everyone's on fire here: Guadagnino, the main trio of actors, the behind-the-scenes artisans, REZNOR & ROSS (!), etc.
