I've come to believe that making a film from children's pov is one of the hardest kind of movies to make; so when I encounter one that has captured some amount of that magic, or one in which child actors give such fine performances, or ends with a happy ending that's actually earned... yep, it feels good.
FYCS: Best Production Design (this must be a shoe-in; oh how this all felt both familiar and otherwordly) Best ensemble Best original score Best song

Kate Maberly is gonna make my ballot too... and everybody forgets that Deakins(!) shot this, and imo it is lowkey one of his best works

So, uh... I just watched The Baby of Macon as my first Greenaway.
This was clearly not a first watch of a director intended by God or His Angels.
(I kinda dig it though. It gets in its own way a lot, but there's no denying the technical feats of the movie. Definite FYC for production design, if nothing else.)

Does anyone know if it is possible to watch the original cut of Iron Monkey, or am I stuck with the Miramax release?

Short CutsBest one scene wonder - Jack Lemmon (not sure if one scene is enough for a nod, but I'm considering it) Co-sign.

Iron Monkey totally rocks and nothing else should even be eligible in choreography. I'm considering throwing it a screenplay nod too - it has an irreverent energy to it that I really enjoyed.

I was about to submit my ballot before remembering these bangers from Nightmare Before Christmas (how did no one mention these?)
for any other last-minute stragglers, some other good songs not yet mentioned: "Philadelphia" from Philadelphia (Stephen alluded to it I think but y'all better not forget it) "I Don't Wanna Fight" and "Stay Awhile" from What's Love Got to Do with It "Again" from Poetic Justice
also co-signing the previous FYC for "All for Love" from Three Musketeers. Cheesy 90s goodness

For a shoo-in, it is shockingly absent from somebody's ballot... I love how it's one of the, like, four movies you go out of your way to protect Thanks for the reminder That movie was a big part of my childhood, so I'm a bit protective. I'd sneak downstairs to watch it at night to help me sleep. I don't hold it as a masterpiece or anything, but I think it is an important movie for kids. So many films nowadays are constant sugar rushes to keep kids occupied. There is nothing wrong with that in itself - nothing wrong with a good Lego Movie or Shrek - but ADHD filmmaking has flooded the children's film market to the point where I actively try to find slower, carefully made movies that allow time to absorb them. (It is when a story half-asses an attempt at emotional resonance in an insistence on "not boring" the audience that I get upset - Coco is a huge offender in this regard.) If I ever have children, I'd want them to have the chance to experience stories like this, along with more action-packed "fun" stories. "The spell was broken. My uncle learned to laugh, and I learned to cry." The Secret Garden, The Fox and the Hound, Fiddler on the Roof, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy X, Ender's Game (the novel, not the abomination of a movie) - they all helped me through tough times as a kid. (Perhaps too much so: I fully admit to immersing myself in stories to emotionally regulate my life, escaping from reality into a world where Zidane wouldn't be alone at his lowest point, or Yuna could surround herself with people who love her as she resolves to give her life for people who spit on and despise her. All the same, I think children should be nurtured on things like these, to teach empathy and compassion.)

Last day for ballots! Except not really because I'll be busy this weekend and won't be able to do the show, so you'll really have a few more if you're tardy.
