I know many people will mention this years Get Out, but another psychological horror thriller is my pick. Black Swan's 100 plus million dollar US gross and it's 320 plus WW gross has flabbergasted me for the last six years. On a budget of 13 million is mind blowing.

Easily My Big Fat Greek Wedding. $5 million budget, started as a limited release in April before going wide in August, never reached #1 at the weekend box office, no real star power, respectable but not great reviews, and yet it made $368 million. What?

My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Black Swan are genuinely jaw-drop-worthy. How does a very dark, disturbing psychological thriller like Black Swan manage to make more than $325 million worldwide? MBFGW is even more surprising considering that the film isn't even that well-liked or well remembered.

Open Water made great money with only a budget of 500k.

What? Definitely this. I still marvel how it happened even after seeing it many, many times (it's one of my father's favorites)

In all honesty I wonder if this had something to do with Black Swan's success-

Passion of Christ comes to mind. I know there are a lot of Christians in NA, but I was still shocked when I saw how much money it had made.

Some great picks in this thread .
American Sniper is another one that took me by surprise.

Oh honey, I still can't get over the fact that Lion made over 140 million... it had Nicole Kidman in it (maybe people didn't notice or something)

Big Fat Greek wedding is probably it, especially when you consider the magnitude of its commercial success. It grossed like 250 mil at the domestic BO without ever having a no. 1 weekend. I thought of a number of Leo movies too (Revenant, Gatsby, Wolf of Wall Street) but I think Leo being in them is the key there. Those movies are why I'd say he's the biggest movie star in the world right now. Lion was another good choice.
Passion of the Christ wasn't the least bit surprising. There was so much hype for that movie when it came out.
Given the lesbian scene, we maybe shouldn't be too surprised about Black Swan. Get Out wasn't really a surprise to me either, the timing for a movie like that was perfect.
