Between a 7.5 - 8 I'll go 7.5 because it will be overrated I guess a bit........it's sweet, doesn't add up to too much but has some key scenes that rule (don't ever trash a restaurant restroom btw)..........also weirdly insightful......... my best friend irl had 5 sisters (no brothers) and I can't begin to tell you how fncked up he is

I hated it the first time I saw it. But I continued to watch it again and again and its brilliance was revealed to me gradually over each of those viewings. I sincerely wish Anderson would return to this type of film-making. Just something short, sweet and to the point but doesn't lose any of its intended power or charm.

10. PTA's first masterpiece, the favorite film of one of my best friends, an indelibly sweet movie about finding strength in love.

Hell is a cinema playing a double feature of The Waterboy and Happy Gilmore only you get inside and the the doors lock with ominous thuds as you are locked in a dark room with Punch-Drunk Love and Uncut Gems and every time the doors unlock you get a quick breath of freedom, only to see that the next room over offers a chance to watch The Meaning of Life and you think that you're saved, but no it's Charlie Kaufman's musings on the meaning of Life and you're locked into watching Synecdoche New York, and so on for all eternity.

(your Gondrys, Jonezes, Kauffmans and Andersons-the both of them) which you could argue were the follow-up to those artists works in the 90s ( Being John Malkovich is like a proper bridge here)... the time of my youth, which I grow to get more nostalgic towards with every passing year. I mean, 2023 was fun and all but we really had it better "in them old dayz". Been years but an 8 for now... the idea of it at least, still feels fresh and unique (though totally could rub one the wrong way... it's not "natural" enough to work on everybody-not saying Stett is everybody ).

Very good. One of 3 good movies PTA has made (Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Punch-Drunk Love).

I haven't watched it since it came out, so I can't give any thoughts beyond the number 8

I wouldnt say it's one of PTA's only 2 good movies (nearly everything he's done is good except Inherent Vice and Magnolia. And Hard Eight is simply just mediocre)
But it is one of the 2 PTA movies I managed to get deeply into...... The Master is the other one.

7 - never felt too strongly about this one. Sandler's acting and Elswit's visuals are the main event and they don't disappoint, but PTA has always been best with costume dramas.

Don't leave out Emily Watson, PSH and Jon Brion (if anyone's "the main event" it's his work behind-or inside - Sandler) like that.

9. About the only time I can stand Sandler, and Emily Watson is incredible in it.

IDK, I don't remember PSH having much screentime or much of a character, or Watson either for that matter. Wasn't she just written to passively adore Sandler?

I get what you mean, but sometimes, the greatness of a performance/presence/moment or a film goes beyond writing. There could be so much more than character-development. It's super-subjective though, and doesn't turn out to be very successful that often if you ask me. PDL does feel like a personal fantasy, written by somebody who definitely was feeling funny at the time (PTA himself said somewhere "I had to get this out of my system" or something like that)... Which makes me wonder if anybody here would call this a "comfort movie"?

And it's not like she doesn't react to things in a believable way, she's clearly weirded out by his behavior earlier in the movie and gets mad at him when he leaves her at the hospital. She's also probably the less passive of the two between them, he's passive about everything besides his pudding scheme Definitely not a comfort movie though. Always surprises me how much it feels like a thriller when I watch it even though it narratively isn't at all. It's the intense sound mix. The phone sex scenes are also some of the most uncomfortable things I've ever seen in a movie.
