Ledger #1, and then some combo of Pearce, McConaughey, Murphy (Oppenheimer) and Bale (The Prestige).
So many more great ones tbh, he's low-key underrated as an actor's director (Cotillard death scene notwithstanding).

Stop talking about acting MAR - just stop Ledger Murphy The GOAT Pearce & Pantoliano “I had gone up to Pacino after a series of takes and given him a note on what I wanted,” Nolan remembered. “He told me, ‘I’ve already done that. You can’t see it to the eye, but I’ve done it on the dailies.’ I looked for it and I was like, ‘Oh, my God,’ because there it was. Great film actors can do that, and that’s what I had with Cillian.”

1. Ledger in The Dark Knight 2. Eckhart in The Dark Knight 3. Oldman in The Dark Knight 4. Murphy in Oppenheimer 5. Pearce in Memento
Yes, I think the three Dark Knight guys are that good and I would have nodded all three of them. Eckhart just got completely overshadowed by Ledger but would have been my win in a lot of years. Oldman's acting in that last scene with the gun to his kid's heads might be the best of his career as well.
HM's to Murphy in Batman Begins and Carrie Ann Moss in Memento

It's #1 Ledger. #2 Murphy in Oppenheimer.
After that? Way too difficult to parse. I like the performances in Insomnia, I like McConaughey in Interstellar, I like somebody in The Prestige, I like everybody in Insomnia. I will say Blunt and Downey Jr. could be like #9 and #11. They got lucky drifting off Cillian.

I’d probably change these after revisiting some of his movies but off the top of my head:
1. Pearce - Memento 2. Murphy -Oppenheimer 3. Ledger - TDK 4. McConaughey - Interstellar 5. Pacino - Insomnia
HM: RDJ and Bale (The Prestige)

1. Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight 2. Cillian Murphy, Oppenheimer
Those 2 are clearly a cut above the rest. I could put any number of performances in the remaining 3 slots, but right now I'll go with:
3. Robert Downey Jr., Oppenheimer 4. Matthew McConaughey, Interstellar 5. Marion Cotillard, Inception

1. Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight 2. Cillian Murphy, Oppenheimer 3. Robert Downey Jr., Oppenheimer 4. Aaron Eckhart, The Dark Knight
and then I guess a tie between Wilkinson & Cillian in Batman and Pearce in Memento which I saw so long ago I barely remember it.
he's not typically an actor's director and his dialogue leans more toward expositional functionality than deep-cutting emotional vulnerability. Ledger's performance is so distinct and so entirely his own creation that it would've been great in a half-serious Batman film directed by anyone else but it does lend itself really well to Nolan's chilly style in TDK, and I've always maintained that Eckhart is severely underrated for capturing the 180 arc of pretty boy political action hero to unhinged vengeful monster for his Two-Face. His turn to the darkside makes for such a memorable and tragic performance. As for Oppenheimer, it's full of so many good-to-great performances that it's kind of a miracle. Pugh was the only weak link (through no fault of her own), but almost everyone else was aces.
I guess Jackman was pretty good in The Prestige

Harvey is the most tragic character in that whole trilogy.
