7. Coming-of-age movies really are hard to stick the landing for me, and while I appreciate this film and what it's going for, I still don't feel as enamoured with it as most. I like that it shows that Ronan is gifted at contemporary American roles and it's a feather in her cap for sure, but that's about it.

6. Not my cup of tea, but I wouldn't necessarily try to dissuade anyone from watching it. I get what people like about it, but it's not for me.

Not my favorite film about adolescence/high-school-to-college transition, but I like it.

6. Aside from Ronan, don't see what is special about it. The catholic school landscape didn't mount to much for me, though it might be one reason it resonated with a lot of people. Bloody Glee used to pull off that "*gasp* he's gay!" kind of twist better. Reminded me of the more effortless Easy A too, in which the Stone-Clarkson dynamic works as well as the mother and daughter here (if not better). *The last great coming-of-age romance I saw a couple of years ago though; is Roy Anderson's A Swedish Love Story. Still under it's spell...

Saoirse is great and Metcalf and Hedges are good but it but it's a pretty middling script, and yes, some pretty annoying characters and dialogue despite the actors carrying it.

The cinematic equivalent of Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl by Broken Social Scene. There's something so warm about its Sacramento setting, pastoral colours, and especially the decision to have it take place in 2003, which might make it the first 2000s period piece. One of the few films authentically reflective in the lowkey nature of its teen angst and not just overwrought hysterics. 8/10
