You can read it here for more context. Here's what he said:
Director Kelly Reichardt had a similar take on Barbie as well. Do you think Barbie might get left off the Best Director or Original Screenplay (or whatever they want to call it) list? The Globes and Critics Choice awards went crazy for the picture. 9 Golden Globe nominations, 18 Critics Choice nominations. I don't think there's any question, the movie is getting into Best Picture. But do you think it'll get Moulin Rouge!, Black Panther, or Jaws treatment? You know, got less nominations than expected. Spielberg once said, "Everybody loves a winner, but nobody loves a WINNER."

I don't think his opinion will be reflected in the way the industry sees this: they'll love it and will nominate it aplenty. I'm actually afraid it can get overnominated, getting into stuff like Sound or Cinematography

It's definitely on track to overperform with nominations (Director, Actress, Supporting Actress, Score and Sound are all potential nominations it could still get on top of the ones it's easily looking to land), and while I do think the film does a fair job of skirting by its capitalist roots (even if it does sometimes have to force its message in hamfisted soliloquys like the ire-inducing America Ferrera scene), this criticism is also perfectly valid.

I think Barbie is more of a commercial film rather than an art film. It plays its card safe, and tried to play both sides. It's neither pro or anti Mattel. I see it in the same way, I view Top Gun: Maverick. Quite frankly, I don't think it was meant to be a deep, thought-provoking film.

Nomination wise it could go either way, Top Gun for example under-performed slightly, despite the level of coverage it got, and the boxoffice behind it. I think were it would likely be hurt most are the less populist branches, namely best director where someone like Ostlund gets to vote, I think Gerwig could easily be not nominated.

I can see Gerwig being left out of the good ole' boys club aka the director's branch. Glazer or Triet could very well replace her for Best Director.

They're the ones that go for more eclectic and avant-garde fare as opposed to be more populist-leaning branches of the Academy and the DGA at large.

I don’t think Gerwig is safe for Director. While I still think she gets nominated I can easily see her missing and wouldn’t be surprised by it.

But saying she'd be a victim of "the good ol' boys" club while listing another female director (Triet) as a possible replacement doesn't quite work.

Gerwig is the most vulnerable to get left off the list. Triet might be a victim of the boys club too. I think Glazer will get in.

Gerwig and Barbie are doing so well but she doesn’t feel like a directors branch choice to me

Anyone who says otherwise is fucking DELUSIONAL. After all the overwhelming buzz with BARBIE all year ("Barbenheimer" and all that), do you have any idea the level of fucking OUTRAGE that would be generated if she was snubbed? No way AMPAS wants to deal with that shit. She's a lock, and Gerwig/Baumbach will probably win whichever Screenplay category they put them in. Also, the 5th slot is 100% OPEN. Why are you acting like she needs to be snubbed for Glazer to make it in? He, like many, can get that 5th slot.

I don't think it was always successful at it, but it 100% without question was meant to be a "deep, thought-provoking film." Social satire/critique, deeply feminist, dismantling the "patriarchy"? Check on all 3 boxes. The ONLY reason it's doing so well with critics/awards is precisely because it clearly tries to be something far more ambitious and bold than a mere commercial film.

One of the most impressive things about Barbie to me is despite how commercial-centric its conception is, Gerwig managed to make a movie that clearly has her stamp and artistically fits within her early directing career. An incredible balancing act and it's going to suck to see Hollywood take the wrong lessons from it.
I just know Richard Brody has something to say about this given how much he loves Barbie and loathed Triangle of Sadness.
Anyway, when it comes to nominations, I can definitely see Barbie underperforming. Like one of those situations where it feels too big to deny, does well with guilds, and then we're going "how the hell did it miss ___" nomination morning.

I'd be shocked - shocked I tell you! - if she missed Director .........the film is a smashing success on so many multiple, pretty complex levels (narrative, thematic, metaphorical, cultural - there's A LOT going on) - commercial and artistic (even though I didn't think it worked apart from the first 1/3rd setup). I don't think it's like Top Gun Maverick much....I think it's closer to Don't Look Up or Bo Burnham's Inside (didn't like those either, thanx4asking) - works that are often commenting on themselves and in a way - removing a discernible contrary audience reaction like Ostlund says. Also Ostlund is obviously crazy because their is nothing good about Capitalism. j/k - this is an interesting POV and he isn't wrong - but this is actually the argument for why his reaction to the movie matters very little for its nomination tally tbh. One of the positives about capitalism is that as there is competition, we create more products. And we try to make them better than the last ones. And for that, we need word of mouth between audiences. But a film like “Barbie” pirates this process by putting a ton of money into marketing, and there is barely any word of mouth.

Bravo to Ruben Ostlund and may God protect Kelly Reichardt.
Doubting Greta gimme-a-break's nomination (and possible win, why not) is almost as unreasonable as me thinking Murphy might miss some months ago.

To those calling Gerwig "a lock" and there's no chance for her to miss, do not forget Bradley Cooper for A Star is Born and Ben Affleck for Argo, if you believe it to be so impossible.

I think that what separates Gerwig from other high profile misses- were she to miss I mean - is she is so linked to its POV. The film is "a Greta Gerwig film" imo in a way the others mentioned were not - it's idiosyncratically a Gerwig film conceptually and in realization. But "could" she miss?
Oh, sure - anything is possible - particularly because Nolan and Scorsese are not which redeuces the available spots....

1. There's nothing wrong with a brand trying to realign its place and its meaning in the world, though it's certainly unfair if they do that by spending millions of dollars on a blockbuster movie that will bury any chance of competition being able to organically plug those gaps, but that's the fucking world.
2. Barbie was 'about statements, quotes, constantly taking a stand against something, etc.' out of service to Mattel, and so the Great Gerwig could get her foot in the door of the big time. This guy just makes his brain-thuddingly simplistic sledgehammer-subtle prosaic lecture movies because he chooses to. His way, nobody wins.

Weren't people MAD when she wasn't nominated for the equally mediocre, though not as annoying Little Women? The Academy will give into her this time I'm sure. Affleck, Cooper and Dennis V. personally didn't have such "history" (that I know of)... and their movies weren't this big and celebrated (even though one of them went on to win BP).

Well twitter is mad about everything constantly so that hardly matters. Let's throw in another one though, Cameron for Avatar 2 (who also hit Critics choice and the Globes), a BIGGER hit than Barbie, he didn't make it either.
