Sean Baker's 'Florida Project' Lands at A24I don't know about Best Picture, but next month I'm definitely going to switch to Willem Dafoe for my Best Supporting Actor pick instead of Michael Stuhlbarg unless someone else pops up that's a better choice. I only went with Stuhlbarg because it seemed he had the potential to follow the footsteps of JK Simmons, Christoph Waltz, and to a degree Mahershala Ali where an actor sweeps most of the critics' prizes and then goes on to win the televised prizes as well. However, I think Dafoe makes more sense. He has a much higher profile. He's a veteran whose been nominated twice already, and The Florida Project might be more Oscar/SAG friendly. SAG loves kids, and The Florida Project could potentially be like Slumdog Millionaire in terms of being an awards juggernaut. I'm not sold on it being a Best Picture winner yet, but I think the potential is certainly there. It would be another "message" movie without feeling like a repeat of Moonlight. I don't think that Call Me By Your Name is like Moonlight, but to pundits and to some voters, I think it would get reduced to being another Moonlight in the end. Probably SAG friendly so potential SAG Ensemble winner. It will likely be A24's number one. Potential Best Supporting Actor winner and Best Supporting Actress nominee/winner. Right now I could definitely see this winning Best Original Screenplay. So it could follow the pattern of recent Best Picture winners of Moonlight and 12 Years a Slave where it wins one supporting award+screenplay=Best Picture or even Spotlight if Dafoe doesn't end up winning.

If the movie's anything like Tangerine, I don't see it having much awards potential, but I'm really looking forward to it.

All this does is confirm my doubts about Lean on Pete
I think Dafoe can happen, but if he were to emerge as a lone nom, a win will be very hard unless he's truly undeniable and sweeps everything (not impossible, but still a tough bargain)
I think the film is in the mix, but I need to see release date before further speculating
