Give your unpopular opinions on any 2023 release here.
I'll start: Ryan Gosling is more annoying than funny in Barbie and his performance is closer to being bad than good. The most overrated performance of the decade so far IMO.

Not really an opinion and this sounds a bit dramatic, but I finally came to the conclusion that Nolan just isn't for me. Watching his movies actively pisses me off so I'll simply avoid them from now on. I'm happy a 3 hour adult drama was such a cultural behemoth, at least.

Leonardo DiCaprio is ruinous in Killers of the Flower Moon, both in terms of his performance (some of the worst mean-mugging overacting I've ever seen from him) and the vanity with which he overwhelmed a story demanding a proper focus and perspective from a marginalized community all for the sake of his ego. I don't give a fuck that the movie wouldn't have gotten a $250 million budget if he hadn't signed on. The movie didn't deserve that budget, and the end result didn't justify it, and I feel so many people are willing to overlook this because they love Scorsese and don't want to be critical of the man in his twilight years.

I'd also add that America Ferrera is much, much better in Dumb Money than she is in Barbie, in which I find her to be pretty amateurish in comparison to the actress who plays her daughter (who would be far more deserving of the Supporting Actress buzz Ferrera is somehow garnering).

The Killer is a solid 30 minute short stretched out to 2 hours. The story is the same as every other hitman story. Just because Fincher's name is on it doesn't make it any different...or better. Bottoms is the most ridiculous nonsensical movie of the year. I guess that's kind of the point, but that doesn't make a movie fun. It makes it stupid and it makes it seem like it was written by 12 year olds. But, fuck the patriarchy right?

Do I have any other kind of opinions? * Lily Gladstone doesn't deserve to win - at all - particularly against Emma Stone.......I mean it's not close and yeah she's good - but she ain't that good.....enough already...... * The Holdovers is a more satisfying movie experience than KotFM or Oppenheimer - and I liked all 3 but it is..... * Kyle Gallner deserves a BA Oscar nod for a piece of exploitation B movie (The Passenger) - nobody has ever talked about this but me - GTFO MAR ....... * Gary Oldman's scene in Oppenheimer is the best scene in the movie ......not sure how unpopular this is but...... * Laurne Calamy in The Origin of Evil (2022 / 2023 US) gives the years best underseen performance * R.M.N. (2022 / 2023 US) is a better foreign film than Anatomy of a Fall which isn't that good aside from the performance which is amazing and also better than Lily Gladstone........um * The Killer is wildly misunderstood - like maddeningly so .....I've read reviews of this from people who like Fincher and they are not just off base......they miss the sense of humor entirely...... * Eileen (85% RT) is the most underrated movie of the year I think although it's acclaimed generally too - but it is on some level because it has no socio-political Leftist Dumbfnck POV - it's just a deceptive, somewhat nasty noir about how fncked up white chicks are - ammirite?..........it's also hot af in a way because it witholds so much.......

* The Holdovers is a more satisfying movie experience than KotFM or Oppenheimer - and I liked all 3 but it is..... To be fair on here, KOTFM and Oppenheimer have had some detractors, where The Holdovers has only gotten praise so far.

Barbie is just okay... frequently amusing but also mildly annoying
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is good
Creed 3 is good, but the weakest of the series so far

- Killers of the Flower Moon could've been a masterpiece if it actually was the (Tom) White Savior story rather than giving 2 hours of screentime to a total dullard of an undercooked character that not even the man who wrote the book on the subject knew too much about. And it wouldn't be just any old white savior story either... look at the title of the book... it's literally about the birth of the fucking FBI. Michael Mann could've perfectly blended the FBI origin story with genuine respect for the Osage (and probably done it in 140 minutes, too).
- Talk to Me is far from the usual A24 try-hard snoozer horror film, and the people saying it is are brainwashed plebs who didn't give it a fair shake.
- The second half of Dream Scenario, while not perfect, isn't really worthy of any contempt... and the very ending is a knockout.
- Damon > Downey in Oppenheimer.
- Anatomy of a Fall is just 2 and a half hours of waiting in vain for something interesting to happen.
- Godzilla Minus One is bar none the hokiest movie of the year. Every scene without Godzilla fucking shit up is very hard to take seriously.
- De Niro in About My Father might still be a top 10 performance of the year tbh.

- Elemental is absolutely wonderful and deserves to be praised alongside the Pixar greats
- Jason Momoa deserves a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Fast X
- Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is very mediocre and feels AI-written
- Bottoms is a failed live-action South Park episode through and through
- She's not bad but there's nothing interesting/remarkable about Da’Vine Joy Randolph's performance in The Holdovers
- The Barbie monologue about how horrible it is to be a woman is an embarrassing blemish on an otherwise very nice film
- Past Lives is just a fine little vibe movie, nothing more

RDJ has been getting widely overpraised for Oppenheimer because people are just happy to see him take on a pre-MCU type role again. I honestly thought Safdie, Affleck, Clarke, Hartnett, Krumholtz, and even DeHaan all stood out much more, despite having nowhere near the same amount of screentime.

For the first time in a decade I walked out of a screening: Bottoms. The 30 minutes I saw was probably the worst thing my being has been exposed to. And I thought her one-note attempt at Toni Erdmann was awful...
Oppenheimer is an excess of momentum. Every scene is big, every time characters talk to each other is about the most important thing in the world, there´s no time for idleness. Objectively when it comes to dialogues is ugly written, many lines are like cookie fortunes phrases. And there's several involuntary comedy moments: the first time Einstein appears behind the car, the first time Oppy reads “I am become death”, jfk callout. Do not understand how this movie is been taken so seriously. The memes between the two genius alluding a sexual tension are well deserved. Everything that happens at The Alamos is great though...
Wonka is much better than the director's highly overpraised previous movie and Timothee is great in it, could've been the laughing joke of Tinseltown so easily.
Barbie... whatever, didn't care for it, toothless stuff. There were so many different paths the conception of movie could've gone through, that doll has been on earth for 70 years, represents pop culture at its finest but the end result I guess represents our sad times, and the whole debate if it favors one gender over the other, nonsense, it is pro-women and pro-men with a few sophisticated jokes here and there.
M:I 7 is the franchise at its finest.
We need more movies like Strays. Remember in Barbie when the ladies deactivate the Kens's brainwashing in Barbieland? Yes, sometimes that's needed.
The Killer is the cinematic Rorschach test of the year. Not sure if its already been brough up here but I'd recommend a mini marathon including Le Samourai (obviousy), Blast of Silence (probably the narration was a crucial influence but here is a whole new character) and Murder by Contract. All equally great.

Knock at the Cabin is Shyamalan cooking with gas. One of his most beautiful and humanistic movies.
Master Gardener > First Reformed (both great).
Magic Mike's Last Dance is a good movie even if it doesn't match the greatness of XXL.
Anatomy of a Fall is a pretty interesting movie on the disintegration of a marriage and the grief-stricken fallout of a family doled out through some of the most nonsensical courtroom scenes since the Hays Code.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 are solid but nothing more. They are essentially the same kind of studio blockbuster products as any other and carry a lot of the same flaws, just avoiding some of the more egregious ones.
This has generally been a great year for movies.

Scream VI is easily Bottom 100 worst film of all time excrement. I wouldn't go that far, but it's the second worst of the series for me after Scream 3.

Ryan Gosling is sublimely overrated in Barbie, and "I'm Just Ken" is annoying
Asteroid City is a phenomenal Wes Anderson film and his best since Grand Budapest
agreed on the Magic Mike take above. Has issues but still a fun and sexy movie with killer dance numbers. The world needs more male stripper movies.

oh and Super Mario Bros is terrible AI-generated nostalgia-bate corporate slop with no story and lifeless voice acting. Completely devoid of likability or jokes and it does as much to make peaches unsexy as CMBYN did to make them hot.

I wouldn't mind not seeing Joaquin Phoenix and Leonardo DiCaprio on the screen for a while... they look and act used up. DiCaprio in Flower Moon is pure masochism, an attempt to humiliate himself over and over and destroy whatever charisma and goodwill he had left, and he's committed to getting your full attention as if what he was doing was the most important thing in the world. He's a specialist in hysterics. And Phoenix plays Napoleon like some horny insect out of Kafka. It'd be funny if the performance was a coherent bundle of ironies, but it isn't. It's a childish performance, prone to making messes that he can't get out of. His other movie this year, Beau is Afraid, I turned off after about 20 mins... life's way too short as it is. He's turning into a mutant Brando. They could both use a real comedy, and soon.
I'm not the biggest DDL fan in the world but these guys make me miss his class and the kind of actor's intelligence that he had... the guy kept his dignity.

So far I have:
1. Barbie really isn't fresh or innovative at all. Pixar's Soul did everything Barbie attempted to do and then some more in 2020 and did it better. Gosling isn't anything special in it either. Any actor in Hollywood in that age range could play that part to similar effects.
2. No actor in Killers of the Flower Moon is worth any accolades. Gladstone is the MVP but she's nothing more than good. De Niro's part could be played by any old actor. Actually he's too old, and this role could've actually been played by DiCaprio who could very well pass for 60 with some slight makeup as he is looking rough these days. And then there's DiCaprio who's just bad in the film. The film is hard carried by the direction, techs, and the history itself (though I will say that those aspects are exceptionally great).
3. The best performance in Oppenheimer is Casey Affleck.
4. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is hard carried by the animation, artwork and music. The script is weak bar the final twist/cliffhanger.
5. John Magaro and Teo Yoo are better than Greta Lee (who's also really good) in Past Lives.

-You know what's a great movie? THE COVENANT! Of all the ripoffs of The Searchers I've seen, this might be the best. That bit where's trying to get some help on the phone? Is that not real life? -In that scene between husband and wife at the end of Killers of the Flower Moon before Leo turns himself in, he looks like Gene Jones. I was just begging Lily to ask him if he was related to the guy who controls her money.

John Wick: Chapter 4 is the best John Wick film by far.
About Dry Grasses is Ceylan at his very best.
Bottoms isn't smart, funny or fun at all, just unbelievably obnoxious and incredibly stupid.
The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan is among the most entertaining and fun adaptations of the book and I'm really looking forward to the sequel.
