Agree with the comparisons I've seen to Tar. Very different films in many, many ways, but with some core similarities as well. The subject matter, to an extent, but mainly in how psychologically rich both films are, and how both dare you to laugh at something you know you shouldn't be laughing at, and to sympathise with people you know you shouldn't sympathise with.
Tar rose higher and higher in my estimations (and I adored it to begin with); I'd now call it my favourite film of the decade so far. May December doesn't quite pack the same undeniable punch for me, but it's only rising in my estimations. I can't wait to watch it again.

Posing this generally: the question of category placement... Who would go where?
I think the three principles (Portman, Moore, Melton) are all leads. Everyone else is supporting.

personally I'm sticking with how they submitted. Portman sole lead, everyone else supporting. Elizabeth has the central POV, begins and ends the film, has the most screentime, and provides almost all the film's satirical comedy. I could see the case for all three being leads as the movie's definitely about the toxic relationship between Gracie and Joe too, but I felt Moore and Melton had substantially less screentime.

Portman’s definitely lead, Moore is definitely supporting, but Melton I feel can lean either way. I’m not against him being placed in supporting but if he were to be considered lead I wouldn’t question it either. Gracie never really gets those Elizabeth like scenes where she’s alone and we see where her head’s at, but Joe certainly does.

Portman and Melton feel like leads to me regardless of screentime. Moore is a bit iffy to me. I feel like she doesn't really have much of an arc as the other two and while she is obviously an essential character in terms of plot, I feel like she remains pretty stagnant in relation to the other two.

Portman is the only lead to me. The whole movie is about what the situation brings out of her character, Moore and Melton are static characters.

So why is this nominated for comedy again?! I mean, it's a satire. The underlying subject matter itself is dark and twisted, but the way the film approaches the sheer inanity of Portman's character and how intrusive she is all for the sake of her art while being completely oblivious to the very real trauma in these people's lives is the blackest of humour.

Portman as sole lead, Moore as supporting along with Melton. But i agree w a few others that if Melton submitted or campaigned as Lead, I wouldn’t be surprised… it makes sense but it still felt like it was narratively and substantively Portman’s film. Category wise, like sure I get its satirical in some sense (not as blatant as other satires though) but idk, this comedy genre is basically a farce now lol. They need an other or dramedy category if they’re just going to put dramas in comedy for the competitive edge all the time.

So why is this nominated for comedy again?! Probably because it's one of the funniest movies of the year.

I can't imagine the mental gymnastics it would take to convince yourself that Moore and Melton are Supporting here, and yet Lily Gladstone is a Lead in Killers of the Flower Moon...

I can't imagine the mental gymnastics it would take to convince yourself that Moore and Melton are Supporting here, and yet Lily Gladstone is a Lead in Killers of the Flower Moon... Upon rumination, Moore I do think is a supporting character through-and-through. Melton I have as a lead as I've outlined elsewhere, but it is certainly a more diminished lead against Portman (which is partly a criticism I have towards the film). Gladstone should be lead but that film fails Mollie Kyle so thoroughly that there's no justifiable way I can agree with a leading push based purely on what's on screen.

They're both static characters and that's the point, Portman is the one whose arc drives the narrative. Gladstone likely has a lot fewer lines and screentime than Leo but she still has her own arc independent from him so they're co leads.

Plus, static characters vs. complete arcs aren't to me at least a great indicator for whether a character is lead or supporting. Paddington is a static character but it'd be insane to say he isn't the lead role of those films. Crispin Glover's George McFly has way more of a defined arc than Michael J. Fox's Marty McFly in Back to the Future and that arc is what drives the bulk of the narrative, but I don't think anyone would suggest Glover is a co-lead of that film. All that being said, I think Melton is a borderline (though I think I'm leaning lead) while Moore is definitely supporting. Gladstone I'd also call supporting.

I'll be honest. I didn't dig this movie. It's a 6/10 or B- material for me. I don't have any issues with the performances from Portman, Moore, and Melton. In my book, they are all leads, but I am okay with whatever the Guilds/Academy/BAFTA want to categorize them as. My big issue is that I didn't find the story to be all that gripping or unique. Would I categorize this movie as a comedy? Nope. I only laughed at the hot dog scene and when they did the sudden dramatic music. I am not a Todd Haynes fan either, except for Carol.

These faces, those outfits... as the rain falls lightly on the Cannes red carpet... this is so Old Hollywood glamour to me. By the way... Did you know Will Ferrell was one of the producers of this?!

I get that this is controversial, but I truly believe it… If you think Moore and Melton are Supporting here, then you must also think Colman and Weisz are Supporting in ‘The Favourite’… The only reason this is even a debate proves just how successful category fraud campaigns have become at infiltrating awards. The Supporting categories were designed for a performance like Cory Michael Smith’s, not Melton’s.

I consider Emma’s Stone the sole lead of The Favourite with Colman and Weisz supporting. Feel the same about Portman as lead and Melton/Moore supporting. But on both cases I consider Weisz and Melton to be borderline vs Colman/Moore to be truly supporting.
