I've discussed this before, but when predicting the next year's possible Best Picture, we need to analyze what could be considered a 'political win.' Because let's face it, the Oscars are always about Bullshit Politics... (okay maybe not "always.") You still get my point though. Sometimes it's a Movie about the Movies, a Film about a Social Issue, or other obvious 'Academy-Like' "reasons";
2016 - Race and Homosexuality 2015 - Pedophile Priests 2014 - Movie about Movies handjob* 2013 - Racism and Slavery 2012 - Movie about Movies handjob* 2011 - Movie about Movies handjob* 2010 - Language and Communication / Disability / Society and Class / Oscar Biopic 2009 - War 2008 - Society and Poverty 2007 - Because the Coen Brothers got "Snubbed" several times and this was the chance to give them their due. 2006 - Because Martin Scorsese got "Snubbed" several times and this was the chance to give him his due. 2005 - Race, Racism, Racial identity, Cultural identity, Identity development, Stereotypes, Communication development, Ego-defensive prejudice, Racism, Racism, Racism, Race, Racism 2004 - Because 'Clint Eastwood,' and this was our final chance to give him his due. 2003 - Because the Past 2 'Lord of the Rings' films got "Snubbed" and this was our last chance to give Peter Jackson his due. 2002 - Musical / Movie about Showbiz biased* 2001 - Language and Communication / Mental Illness / Oscar Biopic 2000 - Benhur-esc Blockbuster Epic 1999 - Society / American Culture 1998 - Society and Class / Oscar Biopic AND SO ON... Type in the Reply Section what 2017 Films you believe could count as a Serious Contender for any of the reasons listed above, or for a different, more specific reason.

I still believe in Downsizing for Originality & Uniqueness THEN AGAIN. It is described as a 'Social Satire.' But It must be pretty heavy in it's themes on Modern Society.

Dunkirk- a saving private ryan-esque beach war epic, Nolan's overdue factor and A Star-making vehicle for One Direction? True. They might give It all the 'Technical' Awards and award Nolan Best Director. For it winning 'Best Picture,' that still remains to be seen.

I still believe in Downsizing for Originality & Uniqueness Q: Since when is Tom Cruise's reaction being counted? I thought it is considered history now!

Probably The Post if they want to go the politics route. Yes, last year I was sort of right in that they might go the escapist route because of how bleak everything seemed last year (US election, Brexit, terrorism continuing, so many big celebrity deaths, etc.), but then there turned out to be backlash against going that way and they went another way. I feel like this year though that the big story is American politics, and how more and more people are becoming fed up with everything going on, and if Trump actually goes down in some way or even if he doesn't, The Post will benefit the most. I could definitely see Spielberg winning a third Best Director Oscar someday, and I think that voters wouldn't mind awarding him a second Best Picture award. (Of course, I thought the same thing with Silence last year.) As we saw on the last SNL. There could be a surprise contender, but right now, imo, out of the predicted frontrunners, The Post feels like it has the best chance of being the consensus pick. Dunkirk feels like something that voters would have gone for before, but now it feels more like a Best Director/technical player. Plus, Nolan could be snubbed yet again. Darkest Hour also feels like a throwback that would have won Best Picture before, but wouldn't today. I think Detroit will suffer from backlash that will derail it's Best Picture chances. If La La Land couldn't go all the way, I don't think The Greatest Showman will either since La La Land had Damien Chazelle who had the plus of being the director of Whiplash too. Wonderstruck may be like Lion in a way and be the sentimental pick, but I think it's too female/child-centric to contend for Best Picture and I think premiering at Cannes instead of Telluride or TIFF was a misstep. I still believe in Downsizing for Originality & Uniqueness I was pretty high on this until the screening reactions because Payne seems like he'll win Best Picture one day, and it seemed like a concept that could send a "message" too. However, after the screening reactions, I don't even know if it will be nominated for Best Picture now even in an expanded lineup.

That must explain why you still think Downsizing will win BP despite its abysmal screening reactions.

Downsizing = the descendant 2.0 Well, The Descendant was nominated for best picture... and since it's 1.0 then 2.0 might have big chance to win!
