I did some digging here. Pretty much every single live action Disney remake since 2014 has scored at least one Oscar nomination. Nothing in the major categories, but we have seen love in the technical categories. We had Maleficent (2014) and Cinderella (2015) nominated just for Costume Design. The Jungle Book (2016), Christopher Robin (2018), and The Lion King (2019) just for Visual Effects. Beauty and the Beast (2017) scored Production Design and Costume Design nominations. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019) just for Makeup & Hairstyling. Mulan (2020) for Costume Design and Visual Effects. Cruella (2021) won for Costume Design and nominated for Makeup & Hairstyling.
What are we forecasting for The Little Mermaid? The original 1989 version was nominated for three Oscars (score and 2 songs), and won for Original Score and Original Song.

If the flashier Dunkirk couldn’t get in, I’m not sure this does As I understand it (N/S the film), there's only one effects scene in Oppenheimer to speak of. And that's not something that this branch tends to go for. Although there're always exceptions. I think there's even a way to properly campaign this that will lead to a nomination: "Look, we've got one effects scene but we've got THE effects scene!" |
