This one is for you stephen and the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia fans. BlackBerry is a Canadian comedy drama about the rise and fall of the first smartphone. Critics loved the film: 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, 85/100 score from the Critics Choice Association. It was even nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. However, it only grossed about 1.4 million in the North America box office. This is peanuts compared to other art house indies like Past Lives (grossed over 7 million), A Thousand and One (3.4 million), or You Hurt My Feelings (4.7 million). The performance from Glenn Howerton seems to be getting a lot of praise for playing Jim Balsillie, the co-creator of the BlackBerry. Gold Derby has him #12 on their Best Supporting Actor list.
What do you think of his chances?

He's incredible and it will take an uncommonly good year for the category to kick Howerton out of my lineups come year's end, but Blackberry was far too early of a release for me to think it will have the legs. Howerton needs the critics to come out in force for him to even have a shot at sniffing a nod.
An Indie Spirit nod does seem likely, though.

He'd absolutely deserve to be in the mix, but BlackBerry being an early release and one that, while acclaimed, hasn't really made significant waves does not bode well for it. Maybe it can get in early on screeners and get a surprise SAG nod, but I just don't see IFC/Elevation having the reach to make much happen.

OR an Andrea Riseborough underground campaign. The Gang Gets Campaigning. That would be a good follow-up to The Gang Desperately Tries to Win an Award episode. What should be in the gift bag, besides a raw egg?
The big handicap for Howerton will actually be the studio push. How much money will are they willing to push for BlackBerry?
Maybe Danny Devito can start the whisper campaign.

The problem with critics saving him, is that John Magaro exists.

Spirit and Gotham Awards will be his ceiling I think. I doubt the critics will show out for him enough when they have Magaro, Gosling and De Niro to award.
Also, is he co-lead?

He really is co-lead but it is easy enough to sell him in supporting. I would think that IFC would want Jay Baruchal go lead. That’s why people have him pegged as supporting.

I would be so happy if he placed on some of the big critics awards but that’s the most I will hope for. Indie Spirit too.
Still predicting him on Goldderby to raise his ranking though IDGAF. I love the 5 star man.
