Never knew how poor this decade was for the nominees. In the 90s I had at least one favorite for every year but here I only really like Crouching Tiger, Lost in Translation, and Sideways.
Confident in A Beautiful Mind, No Country for Old Men, and Inglorious Basterds but they're light compared to those 90s classics.
The rest (4 out of 10) are just the best from the 5 underwhelming choices.
2003 had 3 classics that were nominated so that was the good year.

2000: Gladiator 2001: Fellowship of the Ring 2002: Gangs of New York 2003: Master and Commander (Lost in Translation very, very close. Tough call.) 2004: The Aviator 2005: Brokeback Mountain 2006: The Departed 2007: There Will Be Blood 2008: ......................................Milk or Benji Button... I'll say the latter. Heinous lineup. 2009: A Serious Man

2003 was the last year with 3 classics in a Best Picture lineup. I find that interesting. The last GREAT GREAT year, maybe????
ROTK, Master of Commander, Lost in Translation..... they could've gone any of those - and I'd call it a good choice. Elephant is the main unnominated classic from that year. I also really like Matchstick Men. I like Oldboy too, but more when I was younger. Also The Brown Bunny, Intolerable Cruelty, The Animatrix, and Thirteen.

Far from Heaven being nominated would've broken LOTR's streak in an otherwise really weak BP lineup, and Master and Commander is the only one close in 2003. Not crazy about 2006 or 2008.

2000 - Gladiator. The line-up is solid. Would have liked to see Almost Famous and O' Brother in there. Gladiator wins because it packs the biggest emotional punch and something you can watch over and over again.
2001 - A Beautiful Mind. Solid line-up. Memento would have been a great additional. My logic for ABM is the same logic for Gladiator.
2002 - Gangs of New York. All of these are really good, except for The Hours. As much as I loved Chicago, GONY is one of those big and sprawling epics we rarely see. The film gets better and better every viewing, and the more you look at it, the more depth you see in the characters, plot, history, and film-making. Chicago and The Pianist are probably the easiest to understand.
2003 - Seabiscuit. This one is a tough call. King, Mystic River, and LIT are quite good -- I have seen them all at least 4 times (And I rarely re-watch movies). But the one I would most want to watch again is Seabiscuit.
2004 - The Aviator. Great line-up. I love all of these films. But The Aviator had the most memorable moments, particularly the end and the scenes with Kate Becknisale.
2005 - One of the worst Best Picture line-ups of all-time. I am going to pick the best of the worst, which is Munich. A History of Violence would have been my pick, if it was nominated.
2006 - Little Miss Sunshine by a nose. The Departed comes very very close.
2007 - Michael Clayton. Not the biggest No Country or TWBB fan. Clayton was the most memorable for me. Love Swinton, Wilkinson, and Clooney here.
2008 - Can I say tie? Slumdog Millionaire and Frost/Nixon are my favorites. Going to go rebel and say Frost/Nixon.
2009 - Up. Hands down. Lets not even debate this one.

Letters from Iwo Jima There Will Be Blood Frost/Nixon Inglourious Basterds Wonderful selections in bold. I am a bit surprised, we have some GONY And F/N fans here. F/N is one of the most entertaining films I have ever seen. I smiled for like 90% of the time. GONY is one of the most complicated films which makes more sense in multiple viewings.
