Are they aware that Tatsuya Nakadai is still alive?....unfortunately they probably don't even know who he is.

Also Littleton's inclusion is kind of strange, E.T. is her only nomination, and her work outside of it isn't all that notable.

Angela Bassett, Mel Brooks, Carol Littleton and Michelle Satter. Do you think the Bassett Oscar was inspired by her losing the BAFTA, SAG, and OSCAR? Bassett is a legend. The first time I saw her on screen was Strange Days, which is one of my favorite cult films of all-time.

I'm 100% sure that's why, considering they were pushing the "It's her time!" narrative so hard, when in reality that sort of mindset is what the honorary Oscar is supposed to be about, and they figured it would be a way to have their cake and eat it, too. If the roles were reversed, I guarantee Jamie Lee Curtis would've been in the hunt for the honorary this year.

This is why I never use "career achievement" logic for predicting Oscars. If they are truly "overdue", then they should receive an honorary Oscar for their entire body of work, not just for X performance. The Academy comes away "clean" here: Both Curtis and Bassett get to win Oscars in 2023.
Do you think they're going to give Glenn Close an honorary Oscar someday? It's interesting that they didn't reward Glenn Close after she lost to Colman.

Which really sucks for Kerry Condon, but I hope she at least gets great roles going forward and who can capitalize on the heat of her Oscar nomination. From what I have heard, Close has apparently been offered it a few times and declined it, as she feels she is still competitive enough to win the award outright. Which, if true, fair play to her . . . although I seriously don't think she can win now unless she is truly undeniable; they tried so hard with The Wife based off the overdue narrative and it flopped in the end, and I just can't see that momentum ever being regained. I think they missed their shot and I don't see the stars aligning again, especially as she lost immediately afterward in a COVID year to a Hollywood newcomer in a similar sort of role.

So what you're saying is... Angela Bassett did the thing? More like, the Board of Governors did the thing.

That's interesting -- Close has declined honorary Oscars. Condon will be back in the Oscar conversation again. Ditto for Austin Butler and Paul Mescal.
