Past Lives marks the film debut of writer and director Celine Song. The film revolves around two childhood friends -- Nora (Greta Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo Yoo) -- who end up reuniting after 20 years apart. There's no Critics Choice Association score just yet, but on Rotten Tomatoes, the film sits at 97% approval and a 9.1/10 critical mean score. IMDB users gave the film an 8.4/10 rating. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and then the Berlin Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Golden Berlin Bear award.
What do you see as the potential for this film? A2A distributed the motion picture. Its already grossed over 2 million dollars, and going to wider next weekend.

Picture, Screenplay - it could easily win this - Actress
I am not so sure about director or anybody else besides Lee getting in - it's a very small and quiet movie - maybe too quiet.......this film is not special until the 3rd act - where it gets very, very special and packs a wallop
Supporting actor is a strong possibilty.....
Also, this movie has a marvelous, deceptive score that will likely be passed over and should not be - the same goes for the editing which is very subtle so I expect it to miss there too but I can remember the way whole scenes flowed several weeks later ......
A great-ish movie .....

Speaking of techs, I actually really appreciated the cinematography.
A24 were back with a vengeance last year, I think they'll push this pretty hard.

Actually John Magaro is a real interesting case because that character ends up being the one you could think about the most - though I don't think it's the performance as much as the character ........ it will be really interesting to see how much reach this screenplay pulls to get him maybe included. This screenplay is just meticulous ........the amount of nods depends on how people respond to that script ........as an end to itself or something that pulls other things with it...... |

I can see it getting Picture and Screenplay nominations pretty easily, and I think Director, Actress, maybe Supporting Actor and Editing could be on the table but those categories are looking pretty stacked already and Past Lives is a super-early release that would have to maintain buzz against the bigger movies.

Magaro feels like a critics winner (I suspect he might win one of the main big ones). I feel support from the critics along with love for the film should be able to take him over the line.
