In America, tipping is pretty much mandatory. It is basically a "strong suggestion". Food servers get paid less than minimum wage and rely on tips for their income. When you give the server a tip, a portion of that money goes toward the cooks. When I went to Europe, I was told that tipping was seen as offensive and unethical, and it was an "American custom". What do you guys think of the practice? Does your opinion change if we're talking about bellhops and valet attendants?

If restaurants paid a fair wage to their employees, there'd be no tip. If you don't want it cutting into your profits because you're a greedy scumbag, just add the price of a tip onto the meal anyway, damn it. Then we can tip the server if we feel like it as a bonus for a job well done, if we must have tipping in this damn country.

Um, tip your waitress / waiter - and tip them generously - and if you can't / won't then don't go out to sit down and eat .........particularly if serving you breakfast which involves bringing me coffee which will be done to an almost comical / obscene degree However if I don't sit, I don't tip - I'm more likely to steal the tip jar at Starbucks or something like that tbh - because that's BS Also if you don't tip how do you get to throw your money around and feel better about your shitty existence than the people who are serving you food? Kidding / maybe...... Tip ffs.........cheapskates

From what I've always been told, waiters and waitresses are held in higher regard in Europe. So I imagine that's why there's a huge discrepancy between tipping over there and here (the US). Personally, I'd feel like an asshole NOT tipping.

Personally, I'd feel like an asshole NOT tipping. That's because of the economic system in America. Not tipping means, you don't respect the establishment.

I always carry spare cash in my wallet solely for tipping money. Not that I “enjoy” doing it, but I suck it up for as long as America doesn’t have its shit together.
I’m with Micah. Pay your damn workers better.

How MAR is it that we've turned a question on our "feelings" about the social custom of monetizing gratitude into an attack on America's (still awesome, ftw) capitalist economy ......love our political threads........um.......... even though we have no politcal threads anymore......

Waiters simply usually (not always) have a decent salary, so they can live with it, but tips are always welcome. Let's say it's usually seen as a plus, if the waiter has been nice or efficient. It can be just a couple of euro or, if you are (extremely) wealthy, some thousands...

Most of us don't have an issue with tipping, if it's given out as a luxury rather than something necessary to pay workers salary. If you don't give a tip in America, it is seen as disrespectful and cruel.

Oh honeys, there's nothing wrong with shoving money into somebody's underwear so long as you are aware that anything else is extra. That's the only time you are allowed to touch.

The trouble is that the capitalist economy - in the specific cases of waiting, as is being discussed here - has screwed over the worker so much that they *NEED* a proper tip. I believe that waiters should be respected! Respected SO MUCH, in fact, that they are given fair wages by their employers!
And then, when it is my choice to show gratitude, I shall be happy to do so.
Damn you, Pac. You're making a commie out of me.

If they were given a fair wage they wouldn't have a job though.......that's "Progressive" (yeah, right) nonsense .......the reason a US diner can hire all those waitresses is on tips ...........this "as long as America is the way it is" stuff is quite simplistic .........America has been the way it is for ~ 250 years............it's not changing - we're not Norway dammit!.......so we're all just gonna suck it up and tip and go broke until we die ......which isn't even so bad really - and I'll prove it: Have you ever tipped more to a pretty waitress - because I totally do that all the time - or gone to a bar just because they have a hot barmaid - who you know you will overtip just to impress her / show-off? I'mmina say most guys have ........because men are thankful for the mammaries memories when it comes to hot barmaids / sexy cocktail waitresses and that's when our "Progressive" ideals (yeah right) about a "living wage" go right out the f'n window ...... Ever try a burger at Hooters? They are awful ...........and ........I still go to Hooters constantly ........

I don’t really have any thoughts about it. I tip generously with very few exceptions for anyone in the service industry. Obviously all of these people should be paid more but I’m a realist and not gonna be a dick to underpaid people that are working their assets off.

Paywall article (no way am I paying for USA Today). What's the summary? Tipping started because employers didn't want to pay black workers a normal salary.

"Tipping and slavery. America at its finest!" Slavery existed in Europe too however. As usual, the true villians are actually @ ibbi - the British ffs - who invent shit all the time that Americans then stupidly try to copy: "Progressive Rock" for one thing.....I mean what was that all about ....... The practice of tipping began in Tudor England. In medieval times, tipping was a master-serf custom wherein a servant would receive extra money for having performed superbly well ........ edit: or if they were really, really hot

To be honest salaries are extremely low in Europe compared to America, though Europe is generally much cheaper these days too (except maybe Switzerland). The thing I don't understand is why exclude the tips and VAT from the prices on the menu? That makes no sense to me.

Only tip at a restaurant if I get exceptional service or I’m in a good mood, both are rare. Always tip $1 or $2 per drink at bars tho
