Since a call has been made to bring this to a vote for the '96 AMARAs, let's put it here.
My opinion: If a movie adapted from a play is more or less exactly the same as its source, is it still a great screenplay? (I'm looking at you, Oscar nominated writer Kenneth Branagh of Hamlet.) I say yes. The important thing is that it works for the movie. But then, I've never really cared about the original/adapted divide, which is where this fits in rather snugly. If no transformative work has been done, can we label the music as original? Common sense says no. So to sum up my opinion:

I mean, it is adapted. It's not wholly original but the key motif and more memorable music is taken from elsewhere.
I personally think that if you just did away with the "original" in the category's title, it would be better in the long run.

I don't think something that's this reliant on a pre-existing tune should be in contention. But there's an easier way to solve this 1996 situation - just nominate other scores that are better anyway (The Portrait of a Lady, The English Patient, The Rock, Independence Day, Dragonheart, Kids Return, Mars Attacks!, The Hunchback of Notre Dame).
