Boogie Nights
I will never understand what everyone sees in PTA. His DDL stuff is good, but that's it. I'll tackle what I like about this movie first:
1. Alfred Molina. It is unforgivable that this exact character wasn't cast as Peter Quill's father in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, is all I'm sayin'. 2. Everything from "God Only Knows" onward is pretty touching, almost making me feel emotions for these losers I spent the previous 135 minutes hoping would end up the victims of a Quentin Tarantino finale.
Okay, that's pretty much it. The major problem here is that the movie is SO DAMN DIFFUSE. So many characters who drop out of the narrative for 50(?) minutes at a stretch only to pop back in again, all of whom are the same brand of insufferable. PTA hangout movies are the worst hangout movies, because everyone is a representation of his Dirk Diggler sized ego. I just wanted somebody to actually not be a self-involved little shit for two seconds (which is why I appreciate that montage towards the end), but they're so fucking annoying with their drugs and sex and... complete lack of personality outside of those, save for Buck. This is an ensemble movie with a billion subplots, yet they're all the same person personality wise. I don't get it.
Edit: I forgot to mention that Jack Horner is an evil, EVIL man and the movie comes off as celebratory of him. I guess I should expect that from the guy that celebrated grooming a teenager in Licorice Pizza, and to the credit of this movie, it could be read as subtly exposing Jack's evil doings (he ensnares and enslaves every other member of the cast), but I don't buy it. The movie likes him too much.

Lost Highway
Well, that was pointless and ugly. It's fine for a movie not to answer anything, but it has to make me want to ask questions. I was vibing with this at first, but at a specific moment - I think you all will know the one - the movie switches gears and has to start from scratch to get any audience participation. And it failed. I didn't care, all the way through the pointless conclusion that changes nothing. So this is another write-off. Let's hope the next one is better.

The Sweet Hereafter
I admire this more than I like it. I think the dynamics between the townspeople is very soap opera-ish, and drags down an otherwise touching look at people struggling with their pain. It's all very moving when it focuses on Mitchell, though.

Petition to include the titular song from "Princess Mononoke" as a write-in nominee. How the heck did we miss that one? (I myself just plumb forgot about it being in the movie but I rewatched it yesterday and it was very much there!)

I was pulling for it, but I think it was third on my ballot. (The other two got in, thankfully.)

Aww! PTA detractors are perpetual boat-missers. He's better than your all-time favorite filmmaker. 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️ P.S. Not gonna defend Jack Horner, but once again: BULL-fucking-SHIT on the "LICORICE PIZZA celebrates grooming" braindead garbage! Alana NEVER grooms him, and it's debatable whether the ending is meant to be romantic or not. He spends the whole movie hitting on her, and she spends 95% of it turning him down.

Everyone needs to do better about posting song FYCs going forward because I'm mostly piecing mine together from the GG and Oscar nominees.

The Apostle
What a hard movie to pin down. I don't like it, but I kind of admire its angle? It doesn't preach to you, it just shows events and lets you determine the morality of these characters. The movie is not made to validate anyone. Unfortunately, this refusal to pick a side means that... it doesn't say much of anything at all? It's a Rorschach test of a movie: you get out of it what you bring in.

I may extend the deadline for a few days, as I will be unable to host a ceremony on Friday or Saturday (possibly not Sunday, Monday or Tuesday either). So there's likely another week and a half before presentations are made.
That is, if I host the ceremony in the evening. The other option is that I hold the ceremony during the day on Friday (or Monday or Tuesday), around noon EST. Are there any preferences either way? A lot of people don't get to watch live no matter when it happens, but I'll leave it up to people who are interested.
