Honestly, aside from the lack of Alfred Molina/Kevin Spacey/Philip Seymour Hoffman (Hard Eight) in Supporting Actor, I don't really have anything negative to say here. I probably would've had more Event Horizon in the techs, though.

Best achievement in directing Paul Thomas Anderson, Boogie Nights James Cameron, Titanic Atom Egoyan, The Sweet Hereafter Curtis Hanson, L.A. Confidential David Lynch, Lost Highway Hayao Miyazaki, Princess Mononoke Quentin Tarantino, Jackie Brown Holy fucking shit! That is almost my EXACT Best Director line-up! Except I had Ang Lee instead of the self-appointed King of the World. In my short history voting on these things, first time I've gone 6 for 7 in one of the major categories. π

Surprised Basinger made it, given her win isn't overly popular around her. We really failed Amy Gaipa here.

Also, was Life is Beautiful eligible this round? I don't recall seeing a single nomination but I know this board hates that movie, so... It was just the two of us and Hugo, pretty much.

I have thoughts 1. Amistad blanked everywhere is crazy. It was consistently #5 in most of my categories so I can understand it missing for cinematography & costumes, but Hopkins is low hanging fruit and the production design?!?... come on now. I'm not gonna complain too much because my picks matched 4/5 with these noms in that category but if anyone should've gotten in it should've been Rick Carter. 2. no DDL or Watson... smh hasn't Ireland already been through enough these last few days and we have to go snubbing The Boxer too 3. love the nods for Mononoke 4. Funny Games getting in for acting and screenplay kind of makes up for it missing BP and BD 5. Mrs Brown significantly underrated 6. Love Hunt being here and Nicholson not tbh 7. SLJ deserved nods for two movies and missed for both. Yikes. 8. No Mark Bridges for Boogie Nights is crazy. 9. Love the song lineup even sans Hercules (clearly no Disney adults here) 10. thanks for the presentation Martin!

Was there category splitting with SLJ or something? It's one of his best performances! There was one vote in supporting, but I don't think it mattered. He was close though. I'll have to check. Uh, that one vote in supporting I mentioned earlier? That kept him out of lead. A single point is all he needed. (He had the same number of points as the lowest nominee in lead, but fewer ballots).

BEST MOTION PICTURE OF THE YEAR Boogie Nights Jackie Brown L.A. Confidential Lost Highway Princess Mononoke The Sweet Hereafter Titanic Again, almost my exact line-up except for the boat movie! I would have had CHASING AMY instead of that, but I struggled haaaard between WAG THE DOG and SWEET HEREAFTER for #7 on my ballot. I eventually went with WAG, but I probably picked it cuz I thought SH would be safe for the nom without my help.

My biggest disappointment: Knowing that Nic Cage was one point away from being nominated.

I was torn between him being Supporting or Lead, think a case can be made for both, but it was harder for me to fill 7 slots in Supporting than it was in Lead, especially since you mopes had me put the CONFIDENTIAL boys in Lead! Without them in Lead, SLJ would have made my Top 7, but with them, there was no space for him or for Pacino in DONNIE BRASCO. π€·ββοΈ

And my biggest joy: Me and one other user muscling somebody into one of the acting awards all by ourselves, with two #1 votes. I don't like to talk specifics about nomination numbers for fear of making certain selections sound either safe or hopeless, but I was THRILLED to see someone else go with that #1.

A bit disappointed with the lack of nominations for awesome movies like Cure and Taste of Cherry and even though I'm not much of a fan I though The Game would get a lot of love. And yet I'm pretty happy for Starship Troopers, The Fifth Element and Happy Together even though noms for Pic/Dir were deserving. Now I'm curious to watch Amistad and Kundun to a certain extend Apart from that, mostly what I voted for or was in strong consideration got nomination... which is weird. PS. Batman & Robin was robbed for a costume design nomination for the nipple suit alone!!! but also cotton candy gorilla, guys wtf.....

I didn't vote this time (sorry), I'm not a huge fan of the year in general. Glad for the Titanic overperformance (no Kate Winslet, though? K.), and also for my boy Lynch, even if that's not one of his best films (still, it's more memorable than most of the year's productions). No Life is Beautiful is weird, though. At least Benigni and the score should have gotten in. Also surprised (but not too bothered) that Helen Hunt is As Good as it Gets' sole nomination. Great job, Martin!

Kate Winslet appeared on seven ballots... and received seven points total. She needed nine to get in. And never underestimate this board's hatred of Life Is Beautiful. I'm disappointed, but not surprised.

Not sure how can anyone possibly hate Life is Beautiful, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised, knowing the forum like I do. [sigh] Well, at least AMPAS awarded it in the right categories.

Best performance by an actress in a leading role Joey Lauren Adams, Chasing Amy Kathy Burke, Nil by Mouth Helena Bonham Carter, The Wings of the Dove Judi Dench, Mrs Brown Pam Grier, Jackie Brown Helen Hunt, As Good As It Gets Susanne Lothar, Funny Games Julie Christie robbed, she gave the best performance of the year, as a former Hammer Horror Star film. Alan Rudolph is so underated here!!!

Wow, the supporting actress and lead actor line-ups are almost my own line-ups (6 on 7)!
Impressive list of nominations, but I take it I'm the only one here who loves THE GAME?

I'm not terribly fond of The Game myself but I'm surprised it missed for editing and cinematography.

Yes, AMPAS and its infinite widsom. The only Best Actor winner of the 90's who gets as much hate as Hanks for GUMP, if not MORE. It's VERY easy to hate a pathetic, offensive, painfully unfunny hack joke piece of rancid dog shit like LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL. The only garbage movie that had the balls to try to sugarcoat the fucking Holocaust. The nerve! And the fact Benigni is only slightly less unfunny and obnoxious than Patch Adams makes it all the more repulsive. Though I think even if they did it with peak Woody Allen, it would still leave a bad taste in my mouth. Just one of the most horrifically tone deaf ideas ever for a movie, and its insipid creation lived up to it. It's aged HORRIBLY, and the hatred it gets nowadays is 100% deserved. All the people who fell for it at the time were basically suckers who were in denial about the awfulness of the world and the casual evil of mankind. They probably still are! FUCK THAT MOVIE TO DEATH!! ππ€¬π P.S. "Titanic" is the WORST of the BP nominees here, and "Lost Highway" is absofuckinlutely one of Lynch's greatest films. So you're 0 for 3. π€·ββοΈ
