I mean, dude hasn't been on set in ages. I don't think he'd have an issue doing movies back to back.

He's always going on about Pauline Kael, so not surprised that subject would interest him. I just don't know how he's going to bring it. But I was far more skeptical when I heard he was doing a film about the Manson family and Sharon Tate and I was actually pleased with the way he handled all of that. He said Kate Winslet is one of the best actresses of all time. Go get her, Quentin. I'm sure there are other options that are just as great or better, but I'm too lazy to think of them now. He seems to be going for the stars lately.

Rather than saying, oh bad idea for movie based solely on the title. Shouldn't we be trying to figure out who will play female movie critic? I wonder the age range. Had to guess I would say 40 plus. Cate Blanchett is a perfect fit for QT Tarantino has taken major shots at Blanchett and her career in the past, so I think this collab is pretty unlikely www.theguardian.com/film/2015/aug/31/quentin-tarantino-says-cate-blanchetts-arty-films-dont-have-shelf-lifeI think Nicole Kidman is someone he'd more likely go for, and she'd crush a role like this.

Some weird takes tbh - imo...... I'd be shocked if he cast this female part as the lead role - he's never worked with an Oscar winning actress iirc - much less Blanchett or Winslet ffs - who are "best actress in the English speaking world" level talents ......he cast the hottest actress in the English speaking world in his last movie......and marginalized her for two dudes and his (shitty) ending........ and Margaret Qualley had the best female role in the movie To me this is far more likely to be a role where everybody spins off of "the Kael character" rather than a dominant Oscar winning female role ......I mean Cate Blanchett as a critic sounds great - but Cate Blanchett (or Tilda Swinton or.....) as a Pauline Kael-like character..... for QT ........not so much ..... Now having said that - he loves Winslet so that would be fine with me I guess - but this "let's get a non-American" to play people who were specifically American (like Robbie for Sharon Tate) is quite fncking tiresome ...... Jennifer Jason Leigh is closer to what I have in my head personally .......and a whole bunch of dudes ......but it's hard to cast knowing so little about his vision for the movie........

It's interesting as an extension of OUATIH - in extending the 70s myths of Hollywood.......he potentially could cast a lot of the 70s actors in small roles / cameos but not as themselves - DePac, Beatty, Travolta or even smaller guys O'Neal, Dreyfuss, etc. It will be interesting to see who he casts and whether that person is literally playing Pauline Kael - she was small, pixie-ish - or is it just "someone like Pauline Kael" NGL I thought this was a picture of Lena Dunham, but she's probably too big to play her now I also doubt that he would work with Blanchett. He doesn't like her.

I've always found it really random that he singled Blanchett and Notes on a Scandal out here. It's not like anyone has ever argued Notes on a Scandal is Blanchett's best work (though I personally love it). Blanchett has done stuff like Carol and LOTR trilogy which definitely will still be talked about in the future. It's not like most actors he's worked with have more iconic roles than Blanchett has. Maybe she turned down one of his offers at some point and he was salty? That would be pretty on brand for Tarantino.

He's definitely going to use someone that is Pauline like because he's so fond of her. Right now, I'm going to say he goes with Olivia Colman. Colman is the best suggestion I've seen on this thread. Hope it happens but setting myself up for disappointment.

I'll go ahead and assume he's not going to cast someone he's never seen do an American accent.

I think QT should give into the masses and just cast DDL, Gary Oldman or the ghost of Winston Churchill to play Kael or "Kael-like" - we have had mentioned Riseborough (Brit), Blanchett, Kidman (2 Aussies), Colman (Brit), Winslet (Brit) .....either Brits or Aussies to play a specifically US self-aware, distinctly American aesthete? .......at least Lawrence would make cultural (but not really intellectual or technical) sense - she'd be unconvincing with text of Kael-like jargon I'm guessing (see Jessie Buckley, a Brit - of course - who quotes Kael's review of A Woman Under The Influence - in I'm Thinking of Ending Things like she was being possessed by her spirit) .....do people think QT would be casting to physical resemblance, age or maybe just to play Queen Victoria? There's got to be 1 short, willing to look frumpy American actress who went to Vassar or Sarah Lawrence who is also willing to get a bad haircut and who can handle the dialog and did not grow up calling the TV a telly and is unsure what crisps are ffs and will settle for playing 2nd (or 4th) fiddle to the guys he'll cast probably..... Zoe Kazan? She went to Yale but.......close enough....... “Pauline Kael famously commented, after the 1972 Presidential election, ‘I live in a rather special world. I only know one person who voted for Nixon. Where they are I don’t know. They’re outside my ken. But sometimes when I’m in a theater .......I can feel them.'
She was what Frank Rich called a “fierce critic of all dogmas (including religion, feminism and liberalism)"

I’m going to refrain on speculating on casting for the time being (but I could give a shit if the lead is American or not) but am pretty excited just for the 70’s setting alone. QT is going to have such a major bidding war from studios, the production design is going to be flat out amazing. And I’m also quite excited for the ensemble, I’m imaging quite significant actors would want to sign on even for basically very small parts.

Btw - this movie also allows QT possibly to comment on actors/directors through the stand in of Kael - like we've said irl he doesn't like Blanchett (also not a big Hitchcock fan etc) - well the film subject matter allows many cruel opinions that Kael had to be in the movie you would think - that you could say are opinions QT "agrees" with by including them and excluding others - and I couldn't give a shit about the production design - but everybody's passions lie somewhere .......in his case in some ways it could be more personal to him than any film he's made.......because movies are more important to him than anything and he's more cognizant of 70s film than he was even in OUATIH's era by his age (he's a teen in the 70s)......he went trough it....... we'll see......
There's an amazing video clip of QT assessing 1970 in film specifically - M*A*S*H even more specifically that's a great primer for this material into the 70s

We all know how this ends, right? After the main story (whatever it will be) is done, the titular critic suffers through the compromised and "nice" eighties which QT hates so much... and then comes to a festival, sits down in the theatre, the lights turn off and... we see the opening of "Reservoir Dogs". Her eyes begin to sparkle. We see a Babylon-style montage of QT's movies. And we cut to: Written and Directed by QUENTIN TARANTINO.

My thought was it would end after Jaws and Star Wars and the bombing of Heaven's Gate with THE MOVIE CRITIC sitting down to type out her lament for movies and how they needed a hero in voiceover, and then we'd cut to Video Archives in Manhattan Beach where a young clerk with a large forehead is opening up for the morning, and as if hearing the call he'd turn and stare off into the distance and reply "Don't worry, I'm coming", put on his shades, turn around, and walk in the front door. Fade to black.

Ooh Jennifer Jason Leigh is the best suggestion yet. She could even be easily made to resemble her. We all know he loves to reuse actors. And if he has this usual revolving door of people, I would like to see John Cassavetes, please. There are some crazy stories involving him and Kael. I would like to see references like that. So many big, independent-thinking personalities at that time. Many who she pissed off. This will be personal for him because I remember him saying how much Pauline Kael's reviews influenced him. I say he likes big stars (I like him with DiCaprio), but he mixes in some fresher faces. I saw Once Upon a Time in a Hollywood a few weeks ago and I was shocked to see Elvis 17.0, aka Austin Butler, as one of the Manson Family members and then you had Sydney Sweeney and Margaret Qualley (I like Maid). Now who is going to play Warren Beatty?

Now who is going to play Warren Beatty? Nobody cares about Warren Beatty, as long as we could get DiCaprio and Tobey-Wan as Roger and Gene and Jon Lovitz as Andrew Sarris. Agreed JJL would be a good pick if this really is a literal adaptation (which I have no idea why the internet has taken the suggestion of and run all the way with) Embeth Davidtz could be another one.

Listen, I'm all for any excuse, no matter the stretch, to cast DiCaprio. I love him with Tarantino. I find him hilarious. Rick Dalton? Brilliant.
