Sofia Gubaidulina’s duo sonata for violin and cello — with Yo-Yo Ma on cello in this recording — music that gets under your skin in a weird way (and sounds like it could have inspired Jonny Greenwood in his film scores). Some cool effects with the string instruments, liberal use of glissandos, and sounding almost like woodwinds at times with airy tones.
There was friction between her and the Soviet authorities because of how her music exhibited an interest in spirituality, so like many of her works, this piece was first performed outside the Soviet Union (in this case, 7 years after it was composed).
Still alive at 91...

Wish I could experience it for the first time, tbh... it just came so suddenly in the performance last night and broke our hearts.

Been YouTubing Martha Argerich often. She's superhuman on the piano, she's somehow even better than ever in her 80s, she speaks a zillion languages, and has absolutely no pretense. May as well be strolling to sweep the kitchen when she's going to play. Yet she's the GOAT.
