I've had this idea for a while and I want to try it.
Let's make a list of the 100 movies from world cinema that we think are deserving of a spot. Send me a list of 30 ranked movies that you think qualify, with the #1 getting 30 points and your #30 getting just one. I would argue short films are eligible too.
Tentative deadline: October 15. I want to give us all a long time to cover blindspots and to rewatch a few movies.
ELIGIBILITY ISSUES: There will surely be questions about eligibility. Do films in English from non-English directors qualify, for example? Let's discuss that together. My idea is that movies like Leone's, or even something like Zulawski's Possession, qualify, but I would be stricter on some other options. But again, this is up for debate. I might even tell you to vote for whatever you think fits and then the list will come together by itself.
Ballots received:

Basically non-English films that weren't made in USA/UK, correct?

Basically non-English films that weren't made in USA/UK, correct? That's broadly the case, yes. But as I said, a film like Possession is in English but it goes well for this poll. I think I'll let each voter decide, I won't make any rules.

Maybe the first time that I need no more time to come up with a list since just picking 25 (let alone ranking them) is hard as all hell ... Suspecting The Good, The Bad, the Middle to win #1 here... still I'm excited

If Leone or Possession count, would things like Inarritu's Birdman or Lee's Life of Pi count as well, then? They also have directors from outside the US, but are otherwise pretty Hollywood. Should you limit English-language exceptions to films made outside the US with non-American directors and crews?

That's where I was getting at. I doubt many people would consider Birdman for this particular poll, which is why I'll leave this to any one's judgement.

What of productions that are not Hollywood but are made by English speaking cast/crew? Say, an Irish film like Once?

What of productions that are not Hollywood but are made by English speaking cast/crew? Say, an Irish film like Once? This is an interesting question. I'd be open to Irish or Australian productions for this poll. Yeah, I should have probably written a clearer opening post, because to me world cinema is what is outside of North American and British productions, which are front and center in the industry.

I've decided to allow for lists of 30. I'll change the opening post.

Further FYCs for underseen films (some of which will not make my ballot)

I'll FYC just one movie - again - among the great works I've ever seen and I only saw it last year iirc - This Transient Life (1970) - which is a major, complicated, extremely challenging masterpiece that has never been mentioned by anyone on here at all......seriously, wtf MAR .....Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life........

Well I'm just doing foreign language here. I certainly don't think of a movie in English with American movie stars distributed by MGM/UA (i.e, The Good, the Bad, and the ugly) as "world cinema".

I lean this way as well. I feel that this is the clearest option for eligibility, as there is a lot of grey area otherwise.

I think animated films shouldn't count (because most are doubled when they were selled to other countries, foreign films that were shoot in English, outside English Countries for example half of Isabel Coixet, Jaume Balaguero or Roman Polanski), as well as silent films or most are without any speaking word (for example the Artist).

love the idea for this poll!
FYC: Il Posto (1961) Lina Wertmüller's stuff, especially Love and Anarchy (1973) Sciamma, Sciamma, Sciamma, and I'll say it once more. Sciamma. Costa-Gavras, especially Z and State of Siege but The Confession is wonderful too
and it'd be swell if Italian horror maestros Bava or Argento could get in there somewhere. I'll definitely be voting for Suspiria.

Everyone check out Leolo (if you can find it) and then do me a favor and vote for it. Thanks.

I watched Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989) last night and must recommend it. Idk if it would make my top 25/30 but certainly belongs in the top 50 of this poll
