More folk horror movies need sick metal soundtracks. The latest microbudget horror from the writing/directing/acting/editing/photographing/composing/costuming/sound team of the Adams family (John Adams, Tobey Poser, and their daughters Lulu and Zelda - with a special bit part from John Adams Sr.) is a banger of a coming-of-age movie that looks at arthouse A24 horror shit and says "that's cool and all, but do you have witches playing metal music and killing people with magic and shit? No? Then fuck off!" and proceeds to, like, rip the throat out of Saint Maud and use her bones as a fucking drum set. I mean, the movie is a mess and it's actually pretty slow going, but there's no pretentiousness here. It's a simple tale, simply told, but with such gusto and enthusiasm and no subtext. The very end of the movie made me cackle with sadistic glee, and how often do I get to say that? Not quite as much fun as the family's previous effort (the delightfully grotesque ghost story The Deeper You Dig, which also had a really funny and fucked up ending), but still pretty dang good. A24 and major studios may be trying to strangle the modern horror genre in different ways, but the lifeblood of gnarly horror is still gushing in little indie hits like this. "Want anything?" "...Bass strings?" "You've got it."

The Deeper You Dig is their best so far but I love how the family that slays together, stays together and the whole filmmaking process they have going on. There going to do something specialone day .....or die trying...... Hellbender is like a lesser version of You Won't Be Alone which made my top 10 in 2022 (The Fabelmans, All Quiet On The Western Front this boards big dumb suck-off MAverick didn't, thanks) and is sort of like Hellbender but better - and way more pretentious - and without the metal ............but with shapeshifing wolves which is in many ways even more metal actually......

Added to my watchlist. Meaning that I'll get to it in, like, ten months.

Make this thread an Adams Family thread buddy I'll change that thread name! Some of the most exciting American filmmakers around. (Put this weirdoes and Mickey Reece in charge of Hollywood, please and thank you.) Didn't hear anything about the movie. It's on my list now (meaning I'll get to it in a year or so)
