I have some more free time today than usual, and after I finish BARDO (more of a chore cuz I started yesterday and still have half an hour but...zzzz, though the Cinematography nod was 100% deserved & inspired), I want to see one of the few nominated films I haven't seen yet that are available. The most obvious choice is AQOTWF (that and WOMEN TALKING are the only BP nominees I haven't seen), but I think I'm feeling too depressed & distracted to see a 2-hour+ war film (is it really that much different than your usual high caliber war movie?). The other choices are AFTERSUN (safest choice since it's the shortest, but I started watching in and...eh, kinda boring), TO LESLIE (definitely seeing it this week, just not sure if today) and, of course, BLONDE.
I know it's both the longest AND the most critically reviled of the bunch, but...I dunno, seems most like my wheelhouse. I saw one of its rare defenders compare it to David Lynch's work (particularly MD and FWWM), and that certainly peaked my interest big time.
I know these boards are no different from anywhere else and most here didn't like it, but can the people who actually liked it raise their hand? Based on WHO responds, and if it's someone I usually agree or disagree with, I may determine whether to see it or not.

It's flawed but it's good. It chooses to explore one avenue (darkness) but does so thoroughly and uncompromisingly. A peculiar imaginary look at the turmoil Monroe might've experienced. And Ana de Armas is magnificent.

I was a thumbs down for it but I think the most interesting thing about it - and Babylon somewhat too - is that both of those ambitious, messy films had a lot more to admire in them than many of the 2022 movies which were "beloved" this year ......
Both of those movies will be watched, talked about and debated years from now - neither will disappear from discussion for genuine film lovers .......neither worked (for me) but their epitaphs haven't really been fully written.......they aren't too far removed from mother! etc........another unsuccessful, overstuffed misfire like Blonde and Babylon imo - but ones that encourage much thought, discussion, debate
Movies that encourage actual thought should be cut a little more slack than the overt hatred they got.......

I liked it quite a bit, although it definitely has flaws, but if you’re feeling too depressed for AQOTWF I’m not sure Blonde is the pick for you right now.

I admired a lot about it. It's one of the most visually stunning and ambitious films of the year, with Andrew Dominik really flexing his prowess behind the camera. If we didn't live in such dumb times with mind-numbingly insipid, Twitter-brain-rotted discourse running things, he would've likely been in the conversation for a Best Director nom.
It's obviously flawed and takes some weird narrative detours, and I certainly understand why people were offended at its depiction of Marilyn. But it's important to keep in mind that it's not really a biopic, it's an allegory about Hollywood that uses her storied persona as a tool to get its messages across. This is why I'm always baffled when people say it should've been about some random fictitious starlet instead of Marilyn herself...that would've defeated the film's entire purpose.

I quite enjoyed it. Not usually into artsy fartsy movies but this one captivated me a bit. Watched it over a few days like a miniseries though cause it was kind of boring. Ana de Armas was sublime though and worth watching for her. Should probably win.

I didn't love it because the script is all over the place and kind of a mess, but AdA was good and deserved her nod. Also a lot of the criticism is just really misplaced, aside from the blowjob scene didn't really think any of it was gratuitous. Have no idea what people were expecting, a reasonably accurate depiction of MM's life is going to be about her getting beaten down and destroyed by fame because that's what happened. Trying to make it a happy story about success would have been bullshit and is actually what would have been disrespectful.

I certainly didn't expect to see the inside of Marilyn Monroe's vagina, a fetus that fucking talks, and "daddy" every five seconds in a Cuban accent, lol.

I like it a lot, makes my top 20 of the year, is a rare artifact, a hollywood horror story.... I like it because of the style Dominik's develops throughout, always focusing on the elusive and hazy realities and myths of Monroe, there's many details, the shifting aspect ratios, minimal dialogue, dreamy photograhy, surrealistic touches (the moment the side of bed turns into a waterfall is the most beautiful shot), an inventive way to portray a ménage à troi, Nic Cave's haunting score, all of that created a potent atmosphere. Never understand why this was labeled as sexists, misogynistic, exploitative, degrading... welcome to Monroe's life, and the whole talking fetus thing... is just a metaphor for what Marilyn was experiencing, no anti abortion propaganda behind (that Planned Parenthood statement on the washing post was funny, there's true battles to fight out there...) also admire de Armas' commitment, at times her accent can be detected but I can't take her eerily impression for granted.
More fearless and disruptive movies like Blonde please

I want to hear from FANS of the movie. Not braindead, triggered, slanderous, virtue-signaling SJW zombies who freely admit they think Michelle Yeoh should beat better performances just cuz she's Asian. So, even though your boring & trite vile makes me want to see it more than any praise from people I respect, kindly get the fuck off my thread.

I had some issues with it but liked it more than I disliked it. Cinematography and Ana de Armas were the highlights.

I was a fan! Though I do wish it had been directed by say David Lynch. In the 80s he was actually going to direct a biopic. A script was written (Venus Descending I think was the name?) but apparently the higher ups decided against it and it never was made.

Definitely got Lynchian vibes from this.

Oh honeys, I can't even remember Blonde... but I do remember what a tedious pity party it was. Having watched the CNN series Reframed: Marilyn Monroe just before, which depicted her as a savy feminist business woman exploiting her sexuality for fame and profit and being one of the first actresses to set up her own production company, Blonde sat really uncomfortably with me.

One of the best films of the year. The Academy is too dignified and stuck up to nominate a real filmmaker like Dominik
