Favourite: * All the Banshees love but especially Kerry and Barry. * All Quiet supremacy. * Andrea. * Bardo in Cinematography. * The Quiet Girl. Least Favourite: * Michelle Williams, full stop. Damn. She’s becoming your Patricia Arquette this year, huh? (With the satisfaction of knowing she won’t win at least)

Favorite: 1. Judd Hirsch. 2. Brian Tyree Henry and Hong Chau. Not seen their nominated performances, just really like them. 3. Struggling to think of a third, so I'll just say Top Gun: Maverick in Screenplay when lots of people were doubting it there. That's about it. Happy for the shorts with the funny titles.
Least Favorite: Most of these were expected, so I'll just talk about the harshest snubs: No Decision to Leave, no Dano, no Cameron, and a big fat nope to Nope.

--Avatar in Production Design. yeah I forgot about this one for a sec. Knowing it was coming blunted the blow but it's a totally unnecessary nomination. Their ADG pdf presentation was like 95% concept design.

Faves:
* I think it's so obviously Riseborough because not only is she 2nd best of the nominees (she's not Blanchett, calm down but.....)......her nomination likely knocked out Davis - who got a lot of undeserved praise this year and her nod messes with the corrupt machinery of "precursors / critics / Industry" control It's fucking Punk Rock really ....... * Michelle Williams - she was great, fnck the haters * Dano missing - sorry don't get him, again - made me happy to see him left out * Field who didn't just film the Blanchett show but painted his own tour de force on that big canvas too * Nope missing - screw that PoS - critics who put gave that love this year are seriously fncked in the head Least Fave* Decision to Leave missing - my #2 of the year * Women Talking in BP - GTFO - my most unpleasant film experience of the year - * Deadwyler, unfortunate, but......such is Life

Riseborough getting in is wild (I haven't seen To Leslie yet). Feels like Cotillard's nom in 2016. Maybe this will change things up where the actors have more of a say than studio dollars. I'm cool with that, even if the copy and pasting some of them were doing was funny to me.

Isn’t it doing it’s job then? It is best Production Design. Not best Set Construction. Babylon started in concepts too Everything starts with concept design but nominations for costumes are not nominations for drawings of costumes 🤷 It's about the end result and Avatar's production design is entirely reliant on VFX. I'm not saying Cole & Proctor didn't do anything, but next to the impressive physical sets in Banshees of Inisherin, Bardo which is just jam-packed with props and detail, Woman King, EEAAO, White Noise for that supermarket alone, The Northman, etc (I could go on forever) their concept design doesn't feel remotely nom-worthy to me and we wouldn't be talking about it at all if not for the VFX artists who brought it to life.

I mean, it still starts with the concepts. And even though they weren’t physically constructed, they still had to be constructed. They still had to design the environments, they still had to have input into the look of the film, and they still had to make creative choices for the effects artists to bring to life. Just as the lighting, framing, and camera choices and suggestions of the cinematographer were taken into account as to how the film looked, and how those decisions influenced the style of the film (I mean, look at how beautiful HTTYD looks, because of how deep Deakins’ input went). While I will admit it opens a can of worms, and could feel like “cheating” because you can build an elaborate world on a whim, they still have those key creative choices, and the effects artists have to build according to those specifications. Even Black Panther relies on A LOT of digital accentuation for its sets (hey there, Talokan), but as long as they accentuate the character and personality of their film, I think they can absolutely compete with more traditional, physical sets. On a petty note, last year I nominated Encanto, which I will happily take over The Grand Budapest Redux

“Did you talk to Gwyneth?” i love Gwyneth despite her brand of crazy but the power she has in Hollywood+ is something i want a biopic about in 50 years. *ahem* Let's give some credit to Charlize. She is friends with the director's wife and was the first big name actress to screen it. She screened it for CAA which was key to getting the ball rolling and getting it around to their famous clients.
