Nathaniel over at The Film Experience is predicting Charlotte Wells for a Best Director nomination, but no Best Picture nomination for Aftersun... Hm... What do you think? I'd think the only way this would happen is if both the film and Wells are nominated, à la Benh Zeitlin/ Beasts of the Southern Wild. I mean, she couldn't even get in at BAFTA for screenplay or director. The support just doesn't seem to be there. I'm just wondering about the backlash/uproar of no female Best Director nominees... I'm not sure the branch will go there ever again. We'll see!

Nathaniel, The Film Experience doesn't exactly have the best track record for predictions.

I don't think that's going to be much of a priority for voters this year, especially considering we're coming off of two consecutive female Best Director winners. The field is already packed as it is, and I think if Wells couldn't get traction at BAFTA, I don't really see the Academy making up for that.

I'm not sure the branch will go there ever again. We'll see! I think it says a lot that BAFTA (even with a jury system designed to avoid an all male category) chose only one female nominee. The general consensus this year just is that the best directing was done by men. Further the anonymous ballot system lessens the likelihood of a voter voting for the sake of "representation", particularly in the directors branch who as a group very much prefers just to do their own thing. Even if a voter felt obliged, there isn't a consensus pick on who it should be, given that BAFTA went with Gina Prince-Bythewood over Wells (who has the theoretical late buzz) or Sarah Polley (who had the theoretical early buzz). Yes many prognosticators keep going on and on about Aftersun, but we REALLY haven't seen much of that within the actual industry.

The last 2 winners happened to be female, but they didn't win because of their gender. Both Zhao and Campion were undeniable.

I've got Park Chan-wook in director, Riseborough (over Davis, with de Armas still in), and something in the pit of my stomach is telling me Hanks will sneak in for Elvis...
Also, is it an NGNG to snub Fire of Love in doc?

Nighy misses, Mescal rises. In favor of whom? Nighy hasn't shown any weakness, and his film has only gotten stronger since it is now a likely adapted screenplay nominee as well. My answer is literally in the post.

Spielberg gets shunned ala Affleck/Cooper/McDonagh/Villeneuve. Either Wells, Berger or Park takes his place
