Both make "heavy" films with a lot of time in between each one.
I haven't seen Tar yet, but based on Field's previous two films, it's pretty easily Miller for me (sidenote: where TF did he go??)

This is actually a pretty solid comparison point.
If I were to rank their filmographies together:
1. Foxcatcher (nearly perfect if it weren't for Carell going full Wheezy Joe in the goofy makeup) 2. In the Bedroom (a stellar debut as fine as anyone's this century) 3. TAR (I still don't think it quite comes together like it should and there are some definite naff moments, but I appreciate its ambition) 4. Little Children (easily Field's weakest and far baggier than it should be, but when it works, it works magnificently) 5. Moneyball (I see what it's going for but I just don't like it and I have tried several times) 6. Capote (controversial opinion, but this is a awful movie with my least favourite Hoffman performance and I hate that he won for this)

I'll take both Moneyball and Foxcatcher over all of Field's. Those movies, especially the former, are special to me.

Field and while I like Miller's work, it's not very close.

Miller, easily. Cannot believe almost a decade has gone by.

Quite close - they have at least 3 of the very best American movies of their year - Foxcatcher, Tar, In The Bedroom and that's just the 3 biggies imo...........what now separates Field from Miller is that he wrote a dazzling original and timely script.....I always say this when you write a great original script - set in the present it is a huge benefit.....it is era defining not tied to another medium or the crutch of the past or future.......on the other hand Miller is perfect and Field isn't so much (Little Children is meh)
Both great with actor's PSH's best arguably, Blanchett's best........and more etc.
Field upped this rivaly now in a way - not because Tar is better than Foxcatcher or anything like that - but because he pulled off something else at a screenplay, conceptual and setting and "relevance" level......

Todd Field's great but I don't have a shrine dedicated to him in my closet.

Miller, who has the best film of the two (Foxcatcher) and two others I quite like. I love Tar, and In the Bedroom is very very good, but Little Children is clearly the weak spot for Field.

A couple of pretty similar guys. Both reclusive low output directors who made three very well regarded movies and may never make anything else.
I got to say I prefer Miller because Little Children is the only film of their 6 combined I don’t love.

Field has never directed a bad performance. Can't say the same for Miller.

Foxcatcher is worse than any Field movie, but Moneyball is better than every Field movie, and Capote is probably better than In the Bedroom (which starts off very well, but loses something). So, Miller.

I swear we had this as a poll recently, but with Glazer also included.

I don't mind this thread - really I don't - at all .........like em both.......... but I'll just say that if pacinoyes made this thread at least 3 pains in the ass who would say "what a stupid thread pacinoyes!" and "I am now dumber for having read this thread!" ....then I'd have to slap them around and then.......it's all a vicious circle really ......... Anyhoo..... For me it's not that 1 that I don't love but the 2 that I do by Field - Tar and In The Bedroom - I think those are getting awfully close to 9 + level films and only Foxcatcher rivals that for me......Miller has 3 fine fims but only 1 as good as Field's best(s)

Don't quite get the hype around Miller other than the mystery of what he's been doing for nine years. He made three relatively standard Oscar bait dramas, with Moneyball being an admittedly well crafted one. Tar alone puts Field far ahead. He (and Glazer) are artists to a much greater extent.

I definitely wouldn’t describe Foxcatcher as a standard Oscar bait drama...
