On Thursday, January 19th, the British Academy will announce their nominations for their 76th annual awards. There will be six nominees for directing and acting awards, four for animated feature, and five for the rest of the categories. Click here to view the long list.
What are your predictions? Please post below and lets have a discussion.
For me, here are the burning questions:
1. How many major BAFTA nominations will The Fabelmans get? We know it is not getting nominated for Director, Editing or Supporting Actor. It is only eligible for Film, Actress and Original Screenplay.
2. Two films dominated the long list: All Quiet on the Western Front and The Banshees of Inisherin. Both are eligible for awards in pretty much every category. The question remains is how many will actually make the final cut.
3. How much will the BAFTAs embrace Everything Everywhere All At Once? We know that film critics, HFPA, and Guild members loved the movie. But how about British Academy members? Is it going to be "too weird" for them?
4. Are we going to see Tom Cruise, Paul Mescal, Daniel Kaluuya, or Felix Kammerer make the Best Actor line-up? Most seem to believe Butler, Farrell, Fraser and Nighy are relatively safe for an acting Oscar. That fifth slot seems to be the most open.
5. How about Best Actress? Blanchett and Yeoh are seen as your locks. Are we going to see Ana de Armas, Jessica Chastian, Viola Davis, Danielle Deadwyler, or Michelle Williams getting in?
6. Top Gun: Maverick. Lots of passion for the film among audiences. Neither the Globes or Critics Choice awards nominated it for Director or Screenplay. Will BAFTA think it is more than a technical achievement?
7. The supporting performances. We know that Brendan Gleeson and Ke Huy Quan are relatively safe for a Supporting Actor nomination. Ditto for Kerry Condon and Angela Bassett for Supporting Actress. But what about the others? Stephanie Hsu, Keke Palmer, and the Fabelmans boys are not eligible here.

Just a reminder to everybody so you aren’t too shocked if it happens but the BAFTA voters LOVE Baz Luhrmann. At least they used to when he was more prolific maybe some of the voting demographic has changed since then but just keep it in mind.
I’m just going to do picture because I hate predicting jury categories.
Banshees EEAAO Tar Elvis All Quiet
Could be way off though because I could see just about any long listed movie getting in pretty easily.

It took the jury system two years to go back to being as awful as it was before.

Definitely gone back to normal after the last couple of years. Kind of a shame Minus Emma Thompson, that BAFTA and SAG have (unfuckingbelievably) gone 5/5 in Best Actress makes The Great Riseborough's climb a very uphill one. I feel like Mescal has taken a big step to getting that 5th best actor spot, but what about the 5th in supporting actress? Supporting actor?? Fucking Eddie Redmayne Fucking Woman King FUCKING SHE SAID IN SCREENPLAY

Also, how these people give Elvis an editing nomination? Also also, glad Batman got in for cinematography.
