I get the feeling this is also a back door FYC come AMARA’s time. All I know is this passionate discourse is ironically making me curious to seek the movie out, just to know what the hell everyone’s talking about. It's definitely worth seeking out for her performance.

Great read over at The Film Experience concerning her chances (and others who missed at the major precursors):

I think she Bardems it Biutiful. Yep, this obscure character actress is totally comparable to an Oscar-winning global A-Lister working with a beloved auteur.

Not to mention that Bardem's campaign didn't start during the week of actual nominations voting. He was even a Cannes winner ffs And a BAFTA nominee.

No. Until a few days ago, I think most people would be hard pressed to even know the movie existed. Way too late to make such a big splash.

Or perfectly timed Maybe, but I’d argue it would have been better to build a couple weeks before voting began. It feels like it only took hold *during* voting, and if they’ve already voted early, that’s key ground you’ve lost.

Having just seen the Oscar nomination announcements, I’m going to predict yes…

Thrilled for her. I literally screamed when her name was announced. It’s the best performance of the year imo, and it’s a game changer for tiny indies and Oscar campaigning. Should do a lot for her career as well.

I didn't predict her but I voted yes here. I haven't seen To Leslie so I will hold my tongue re: her (I am much more incensed by de Armas's nomination, and to a lesser extent, Williams' nomination), the issue I have is that Riseborough's nomination will probably normalize this kind of blitz campaign in the future.

Well every C list actor will be doing the same thing next year and it won't work again so yeah maybe it won't be an issue after all.

I guess to elaborate more, what’s wrong with trying to shake of the status quo of standard Studio Campaigns? I’d like to see a continued dismantling of what’s been the norm for decades.

Welp all the nos were wrong. Her campaign paid off, and I hate the discourse it’s going create on Film Twitter. But I can’t deny the optics of Riseborough getting a nomination while Viola Davis and Danielle Deadwyler missed out. I thought they were locks

Yeah, I don’t understand either. Actors spending 5-6 months showing up to every event basically begging for the award.. schmoozing and kissing each others ass is better because..?

I thought they were locks At least Stephanie Hsu was nominated so we won't have to hear about how Curtis was only nominated because of who her parents are.
