Before I make & send my ballot, question for those who've voted or are planning to vote: Pearce and Crowe in L.A. Confidential. Are you putting them in Lead or Supporting? Personally, I believe they are supporting & have always had them both in my S. Actor line-up (with Crowe also being my winner for this year), but if a majority is putting them in Lead, I'd hate to screw up their chances of getting in either category by being one of the few voting for them in Supporting when most of their votes are going in another category. Honestly, to me, if Spacey is supporting, all of them are Supporting. I don't think that film has a lead, it's a true ensemble piece, but the only one I can even kinda buy someone making a case for Lead is Pearce. Definitely not Crowe. Crowe and Pearce are co-leads for me. The crux of the film is about Bud White and Ed Exley's parallel evolutions during the course of the investigation. Spacey's Vincennes should be co-lead as well and would be if they followed the novel's plotting, but most of Vincennes's storyline in the book is pruned, and obviously his earlier exit is set up as such a gut-punch to the audience, but I don't feel we get enough insight into Jack in comparison to Bud and Ed. I could entertain an argument for Spacey to be lead in the vein of Janet Leigh in Psycho, but I don't think it's an ensemble piece where everyone would be supporting.

Just wanted throw out consideration for Thomas Newman's score for Oscar and Lucinda.
Which deserves consideration for this piece at the very least:

This came up in a recent ballot, so I'm gonna open it up here:
Hard Eight: Original or adapted screenplay? It has appeared on both. I haven't seen the film, but it looks to me like it is based on a short film from 1993, so I would assume adapted. Anyway, I want to bring this up in case major vote splitting happens with it. Discuss amongst yourselves.

My take: Adapted because it had a proper separate release (with a distributor and was screened at Sundance) as Coffee & Cigarettes Anderson's short before developing it into a feature. Whereas Boogie Nights is original to me because The Dirk Diggler story was a student film that never was theatrically distributed.

Give me one sec and I'll look at the submitted ballots. I'll edit this response in a few minutes Edit: Both Crowe and Pearce have only appeared as lead so far Okay. Even though I'm not entirely convinced by the argument for them being Lead, I still want them both to get in and not waste my votes, so I'll vote for them in Lead. I'm working on my ballot now. Should be sent this weekend.

Yes (I'm sure many people don't do all categories or even have full list of nominees for the categories they actually do).

Putting Arno Frisch in supporting, and Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce in leading! I haven't seen Funny Games in several years but I remember thinking he's lead; although, I put him in supporting bc someone earlier posted they'd put him there (maybe it was you).

Well, he originally had Frisch as lead, but asked me where others were placing him, and I said supporting. I haven't seen the movie, so work it out amongst yourselves.

A case can be made for both – things happen to the married couple. But as far as I know, you see and hear Frisch a lot more than the man of the couple.
