a week into the new year so it's time to take stock of upcoming shows. 2022 was jam-packed and had several high-profile disappointments so hopefully the new year is more quality over quantity.
New Series
The Last of Us (HBO) - obviously
Hello Tomorrow! (Apple TV+) - sci-fi comedy starring Billy Crudup and Hank Azaria as traveling salesmen trying to hawk timeshares on the moon. Super interested in this one. Crudup is amazing in Morning Show and Apple TV+ has been producing some really good stuff.
The Idol (HBO) - Lily-Rose Depp is an aspiring pop star who forms a complicated relationship with a cult leader played by The Weeknd in this new A24/Sam Levinson LA-set drama. I'm curious. Cast is really interesting too - Suzanna Son, Jane Adams, Dan Levy, Eli Roth, Hank Azaria, and Anne Heche in her final TV role (RIP)
The Curse (Showtime) - HGTV-satire starring Emma Stone, Nathan Fielder and Benny Safide.
and still filming so who knows if we see them this year: Fallout (Prime Video), Alien (FX), and Dune: The Sisterhood (HBO)
New Limited Series
The Fall of the House of Usher (Netflix) - Mike Flanagan does Poe. Yes please!
ShÅgun (FX) - hopefully I get a chance to read the book first but I've been waiting for this one for years and it looks like it finally might drop in 2023.
Masters of the Air (Apple TV+) - Epic historical war drama created by the same guys who did Band of Brothers and Pacific. Austin Butler stars and Barry Keoghan is in there somewhere too.
Love and Death (HBO) - was expecting this one last year. I don't know if anyone watched the Hulu miniseries about axe-murderer Candy Montgomery last year but this is the same story, starring Elizabeth Olsen and Jesse Plemons. I'm burnt out on true crime but I'll watch this one if it gets good feedback.
White House Plumbers (HBO) - another one I was expecting last year, and another story we already saw last year with the excellent Gaslit because Starz beat them to the punch. We'll see how this one compares.
Returning Shows
Succession season 4 (HBO) - HBO is going to have a killer 2023. This show has been solid throughout its runtime and S3 had some its very best moments. Can't wait for another fucked-up Roy family reunion in Spring.
Yellowjackets season 2 (Showtime) - first season was probably the best thing Showtime's ever done. Deliciously nasty premise brilliantly conveyed over two timelines with the nastiest bits always just out of sight but lingering in the background. Second season premiers in late March and I can't wait.
Outlander season 7 (Starz) - the truncated S6 was the show's weakest yet but Outlander thrives on moment-to-moment melodrama. With the War for Independence still looming, I'm hoping S7 tamps down on the boring infighting and focuses more on the pre-war politics. It's going to be a whopping 16 eps so plenty of room for filler but also to build up satisfying dramatic tension. Longer Outlander seasons are better than shorter ones.
True Detective: Night Country (HBO) - I think everyone was shocked when they saw this on HBO's "coming in 2023" promo because I felt like it was still far away. And you see a good bit of content (Jodie foster is going to be incredible) buuuut HBO promised series this time last year that didn't show up in 2022 so I wouldn't expect anything sooner than Q4 and it's always possible it doesn't drop until 2024.
Perry Mason season 2 (HBO) - first season was one of the most underrated dramas of 2020. Beautifully stylized period noir with a stirring Terrence Blanchard jazz score and great performances from Rhys, Maslany and Lithgow. Aesthetically it was everything I wanted from an HBO adult drama and I can't wait where it goes next. Drops on March 6th
You season 4 (Netflix) - this show can be hit or miss but mostly it's fun potboiler stuff and S3 was probably its best yet. Season 4 drops in two parts in February and March.
no confirmation yet but likely to drop in 2023: Sex Education S4 (Netflix), The Great S3 (Hulu), What We Do in the Shadows S5 (FX)
