In the roles made famous by Nastassja Kinski, Peter Firth, and Leigh Lawson in Polanski's 1979 masterpiece, who of today's crop of young actors would you cast? Tess Angel Clare Alec d'Urberville I would definitely like to see Nicholas Hoult as Alec. I think that despite his gorgeous looks, he's more likely to excel in character-driven supporting roles, and he could definitely find interesting and unexpected ways to portray Alec's ambivalent feelings towards Tess as well as his underlying menace. On a tangentially related note, can you believe that Polanski's film grossed over $20 million in America?!

I feel like you'd have to go for a young unknown for Tess. If Aisling Franciosi were ten years younger, she would probably have been my choice.
The real question is who would direct it, because that's more of the appeal to me. It's so easy to make this a stuffy and stiff costume drama and I would rather it be given to someone who isn't just concerned with the fancy dresses and who can evoke the right atmosphere.

I would of course go with Sofia Coppola. Polanski's film is one of her all-time favorites and has been hugely influential on her aesthetic.

I still consider The Beguiled a massive disappointment and a large part of that is her lack of skill in properly lighting that film.

Her charismatic performance in Where the Crawdads Sing (a horrible movie - she's the one saving grace) couldn't help but remind me of Tess, as I think there are more than a few parallels between the two characters.

Ooh, I think I'm going to go with Jodie Comer for Tess... She could speak in her natural Scouse accent, and she could wear that same heart-breaking wig she did in The Last Duel.
