Which of the two performances do you personally prefer - Cate Blanchett in Tár or Michelle Yeoh in Everything Everywhere All at Once? Once again I'm not saying they're 100% gonna be the ones to duke it out at the Oscars, nor am I asking about your personal choice for Best Actress of 2022. I'm just interested to find out which of these two specific performances is better in your eyes

The only female performances that even remotely approach the galaxy that Blanchett is in are Mia Goth in Pearl and Andrea Riseborough in To Leslie in 2022 and they don't either in totality. Certainly not some 50 minute performance by Yeoh ffs. That was a joke - depending how well you follow pacinoyes - and you should btw. Also "Greetings from Maine!" - also a joke...... I said it in the first review in the Tár thread - in the 8 other greatest performances by lead actors male or female - in English in the modern era (post 67) - De Niro (Taxi Driver/Raging Bull), Pacino (GF 2/DDA), Rowlands (A Woman Under the Influence), DDL (TWBB), Streep (Sophie's Choice), Brando (Last Tango in Paris) - Blanchett may be THE most well rounded of all of them.........where she has to show sexuality, a (staggering and unwavering) physicality and suggest a (deteriorating) mental framework, while also convincingly portraying a unique job(s) AND a recognizable daily familial life / work life "balance" - not merely what the character is going through in the movie's events - but how she balances all of that before the movie even begins - she does the backstory too (!?!) - and show how it all falls apart in a believable way. That's not even to discuss where this performance is on a technical level - which is impeccable - not merely how she convinces in the verisimilitude as a conductor - but also of a teacher - and her use of negative space which most actors don't even try in film - how the actor can control the frame and orchestrate (no pun) what we see via movement and motion - and use themselves to convey how the actor can be the auteur - not necessarily the director - of the movie. It's the most technically accomplished of those ^ performances too I'd say..... Yeoh doesn't dominate her movie anywhere close to as much - which, yeah matters a lot - and I do get that she's in a shorter movie that can't replicate Tár - but oh well, tough break - way it goes. I'm not going to make shit up and say she "is the equal to Blanchett" in screen time or its impact .....it's hard to even think of these 2 as being in the same profession much less in competition with each other for their work I think Yeoh might win - but let's hope not ....

I haven't seen any of these films. But supose that the Quality is similar. Blanchett was nominated several times (a third of her Oscar noms were underserved ot at least there were 5 femele performance better than her)and won 2 Oscars. While Yoeh never being nominated, despite the fact she was múltiple times a dark horse container.
So I guess (unless the movie and performance is much more weaker than Blanchett) Yeoh should win.
I will no vote until Ive seen both films.

I think both performances are reaching irritating peaks of "overrated," if I'm being honest. Blanchett's performance is stronger on a technical level and I feel she dominates her film in a way I don't think Yeoh does, but that's by design and that doesn't have any bearing on Yeoh's performance, which is much more complementary with her co-stars.
If Blanchett wins her third for TAR, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world and it would be my favourite of her Oscar-winning performances... but I don't harbor any strong passion for it.
Yeoh winning would be a great thing for her as a long-overlooked actress who has deserved far more attention and accolades than she's gotten, but I just don't think much of the performance beyond it being good. The film really did suffer on a rewatch for me across the board save for Ke Huy Quan's performance.
If I had to pick one, I'd say Blanchett but honestly, as long as it's not Michelle Williams. That would be a disastrous win.

Probably my two favourite performances of the year that I've seen. Don't think either is overrated in the least. Blanchett just devours everything in her path without ever feeling hammy - her relentless gusto works perfectly for the character, and makes her steady unravelling that much more powerful. Yeoh is almost as commanding, and also has such an endearing quality to her performance; I was willing to follow her anywhere, through every one of those universes.
I'll give it to Blanchett, but either winning would be one of the most deserved BA wins I can think of.

Oh honey, the real challenge would have been to have them play each other's roles. Yeoh as Lydia Tar and Blanchett doing martial arts.

Blanchett. Lydia's story arc just punched harder than Evelyn's. You have a master of their craft at the pinnacle of their career thwarted by such a trivial incident in a film that delivers their comeuppance in the bleakest...funniest...way. Crown her...

pacinoyes - Do you think any male actors were on Blanchett's level in 2022? Well I mentioned that for me - there's only 8 other performances - in English, in the last 55 years (!) - male or female - that can stand with Blanchett - "the modern era, post-1967" ......and this year I think only Farrell - in English - is really, really "great" but not close to Blanchett .........my 2nd best male lead English performance is Jeremy Pope (The Inspection) who is also great......... but less so. For non-English language males I like Hae il Park (Decision To Leave) and Emanuel Parvu (Miracle) the best that I saw......I think Hae il Park - much like his romantic, swooning movie - requires a 2nd view to really get. On first watch I said he was solid and the movie was all the director's show ..........on my 2nd watch I realized I missed a whole lot of both of the lead actors nuance ........even though it's totally still the director's show ..........

Not being facetious, genuinely interested to see if there's any worthy performances I've might've missed in the category.

I mean, off the top of my head: Catherine Clinch in The Quiet Girl, Frankie Corio in Aftersun, Zar Amir Ebrahimi in Holy Spider, Saoirse Ronan in See How They Run, Rebecca Hall in Resurrection. Amber Midthunder in Prey, Tilda Swinton in The Eternal Daughter, Taylor Russell in Bones and All, Jennifer Lawrence in Causeway, Ana de Armas in Blonde (despite how one might feel about the film overall), Charlbi Dean in Triangle of Sadness, Daisy Edgar-Jones in Fresh . . . None of them are Oscar magnets nor would I ever expect them to be, but I personally favor them over most of the expected-to-be-nominated field.

Blanchett, but it's massively overrated. Swinton in I Am Love is significantly better than Blanchett in Tar, and didn't get this weird reflexive fellating Blanchett routinely gets. I will never forget those Cinderella raves. Also, I cannot understand how pacinoyes doesn't see how artificial Blanchett's acting is so often. It's pantomime at times.

I love Yeoh in EEAAO, but when I saw Tàr at Venice I thought I'd just seen one of the performances of the decade/century, and I can't even stop thinking about it.

Yeoh is doing her best with weak material but Blanchett whips out an early performance of the decade contender here, so it's not close.

This idiot on Twitter would have an aneurysm if he saw these poll results lol
This guy is one of the most obnoxious people I’ve seen in support of Yeoh. ALWAYS bringing up race
It’s gotten to the point where I want AMPAS to give Yeoh the Oscar so SJWs can shut up about race

Blanchett, but I want Yeoh to win. Why do you want Yeoh to win out of curiosity? Mainly that as an Asian woman in her 60s, this is likely her only chance to win, and she would be a very worthy winner. Blanchett, as a highly respected white actress, will have plenty of other opportunities to win a 3rd Oscar. It's not just about race, it's about opportunity.

That’s fair and at least you’re not obnoxious about it like the dumbass from Twitter I posted But I’m not entirely convinced of the “Cate Blanchett will have plenty more opportunities to win” narrative bc people say this now…until the next time she’s up against a woc. “Well no Latina won a Best Actress before…no Indian/fully black/Native American actress has won before”. I’m frankly tired of this race talk, and it’s weird how tokenism is being embraced. This is not how I want woc to win Oscars. Woc should win bc they gave the best performance, not bc of the “It’s time…” narrative But at this point, I hope Yeoh wins so SJWs can stfu. I also wouldn’t want Cate to get backlash from these obnoxious losers who will no doubt take it out on her personally. That’s how irrational SJWs are. I KNOW they will call her a racist white woman. They will call her selfish for not abstaining from campaigning
