Which of the two performances do you personally prefer - Austin Butler in Elvis or Colin Farrell in The Banshees of Inisherin? I'm not saying they're 100% gonna be the ones to duke it out at the Oscars, nor am I asking about your personal choice for Best Actor of 2022. I'm just interested to find out which of these two specific performances is better in your eyes... even if those eyes still look like this after all the New Year's festivities:

Farrell. Butler did a fine job when he was actually allowed to do something, but the frustration of Elvis is that any time that the film even hints at going into potentially an intriguing place for Butler to actually let loose, it transitions to the next scene. It's the downside to doing such a biopic covering such a huge amount of time. He does shine more as the film goes on but I really feel like the approach of telling the story from Colonel Tom Parker's perspective undercuts the character of Elvis far more than it should.
As much as I adore In Bruges and Farrell's performance in it, I do think upon reflection that Banshees is his career-best performance and I would love to see him win for it, and I think even without him playing as baity a character as Butler or Fraser on paper, what the role requires of him is attention-grabbing enough to win.
So yeah, I think Farrell's better and I think he's winning.

Butler. It's not that close for me either. I like Farrell in his film, but Butler is operating on a completely different level from a pure acting standpoint, imho. Farrell will win this poll comfortably, because it's fashionable these days in some film circles to downgrade biopic performances in big budget Hollywood productions (regardless of the level of difficulty involved for the actor), but what Butler did was uncanny. He gave humanity to a man who had been caricatured to death by millions for decades and essentially become a cartoon character . The more I think about the performance, the more remarkable I believe it is. Arguably the best performance of the year (of what I've seen). I have a strong feeling AMPAS will agree and give Butler the Best Actor Oscar. The winner of the last Best Short Film Oscar, Travon Free and Pete Ramsey the director Spider-Man:Into The Spiderverse seem to agree. Maybe (?) an indication of how the industry will go, as they seem very passionate about Butler’s work. Whisper it quietly, but I also suspect Elvis may be a darkhorse to win Best Picture.
I also think that while 1st with critics groups, with industry voters Farrell is possibly is still behind the likes of Fraser, let alone Butler. Said it many times before, but Farrell's just doesn't feel like the kind of performance that can go all the way and win Best Actor. So I don't think it will.

Farrell
I've said before he's significantly better than Butler or Fraser - who are merely adequate imo. I really don't see Butler as being better than Rhys-Meyers was....there's a lot of impersonation to it....
We had a thread once on "Poetic Actors" and Farrell's performance is distinctly poetic - he has an amazing Oscar clip (should be) scene - the "maybe you were never nice" scene that alone to me is better than Butler........he also has a scope in his performance where he goes from manic to scared to scary to child-like (for example when he gets beaten by the cop) - I mean this turn covers a lot of emotional ground.....and the guy at the end of this movie in some ways is unrecognizable emotionally from the character at the beginning.......
He's also terriffic in how he interacts across the 3 characters and the relatinships he has with each - with his sister, his ex-friend and Keoghan - with whom he has some of his best scenes actually - and talks to him in ways he can't to the other two.... often times good acting is about "reacting" and Farrell has several great, distinctly specific reactions to being judged by all 3 of these other characters.........I think this movie can get 4 acting nods and if it can get 4 acting nods - it's getting at least 3 - it bodes strongly in his favor to actually win - which is iffy .........he's not just the lead, he's lead, MVP, and connecting thread across the other 3 performances too........

Farrell. I couldn’t even finish Elvis. Everything about that piece of trash is dumb as fuck.

Not seen Farrell and I hate as an actor. He had sex with Liz Taylor in order to become a serious actor, despite the fact she was over 75. I wasnt impresed by Austin Butler. So until Ive seen Farrell in a pírate copy (my hate does not allowed to see him in theatres, cable, streaming or on any legal way), I will not vote for any of these.

Butler was very good but I’d put both Farrell and Fraser ahead of him.
