Despite the hype last year, what did you think of his performance in the film?

I thought it was very good. During the conversations with Rodrigues, I could honestly feel the hardships that he went through and to get past the spot Rodrigues was in at that moment.
People harped on his screentime, but I thought he was worthy of a nomination. I don't personally simply because I nom 3-4 of the Moonlight boys.
I'm pretty adamant that if DDL was cast like intended and he had the exact screentime and caliber of performance then DDL would have been nominated by the Academy for that exact same performance

Fine, serviceable, but Ogata and Asano were the MVPs. I'd probably rank Driver ahead of him too.

I liked his performance but there were better ones in the film. Garfield was extraordinary.

I loved it. Despite his short screen time, he was really able to bring out the character's struggle and journey in small but powerful ways. Having a rich and complex character helped, but Neeson's always been able to convey a ton of emotion with just his eyes.

Forgettable. I mean, he was good like he always is, but he was barely in it and didn't really make much of an impression when he was. Then again, there was little I really liked about that film at all.

He was alright. Definitely one of the weaker performances in the film.
Really wish DDL would've taken the role instead.

I loved his performance. I thought he was MVP of the film together with Tadanobu Asano.

He was excellent! I don't nominate him, because he's my #6, but he was better than all the nominees this year except Mahershala Ali.

Very good, but his limited screentime meant he didn't have a whole lot to do. His "return" scene was excellent though. Definitely an overhyped performance.

His performance was subtle and moving. Excellent work, just like everyone else in the cast (except Garfield, who was fine but not great).

He wasn't even in like the top three supporting actors.
Whoever played the translator was the best IMO

He was certainly outperformed by several others in that excellent ensemble, but I thought he had a very commanding presence in his limited screen-time and totally owned his scenes. Not a very "showy" performance or anything, but he got the job done, and few could have done it better.

I really enjoyed it, but that might be partly due to the fact that he had the most interesting character trajectory. His character felt entirely lived in and Neeson commanded the screen with grace and subtlety. Garfield and Ogata were the MVPs for me but I still nominate Neeson.

Fine, serviceable, but Ogata and Asano were the MVPs. I'd probably rank Driver ahead of him too. Same.

He was very good, but he's overshadowed by Garfield, Ogata, Kubozuka, and Driver.

He was good enough to not be a dark spot as an ensemble piece, but wasn't individually nom-worthy.

He was quite magnetic in his limited screen time. Very emotionally vulnerable performance. Most of the other prominent supporting performances, primarily Asano and Ogata, were better though.

Loved it. He represents wisdom but at the same time weakness.

I think he was very good and certainly made the most of his limited screentime, but the hype (which I was pushing harder than just about anyone) wasn't quite enough to elevate his work over some of his castmates, including Issey Ogata (my win) and Tadanobu Asano. But honestly, I don't think anyone could've gotten nominated from a film that had the support Paramount had given it.
