But that’s not directing is it? Taylor had directing experience long before the All Too Well short film. She has experience going all the way back to Speak Now iirc. And she was also in a bunch of movies. Why does that not count? As for writing, she’s an excellent storyteller. Just bc she does it through lyrics doesn’t mean she’s brand new to storytelling. Visuals like music videos are also part of storytelling. It’s bizarre this has to be explained bc if it was anyone else, there would not any hostility. People simultaneously dismiss her while also feeling weirdly threatened by her. It’s crazy how she’s has numerous accolades and the respect of her entire industry including from many legends. She also has respect from people outside of her industry including from Guillermo del Toro. The screenwriter of Someone Great wrote that movie bc she was inspired by Taylor’s storytelling in one of her songs. That doesn’t count for anything? If Adele decided to write and direct a screenplay, people would be thrilled. I mentioned Beyoncé. No one batted an eye. In fact, they were going “Yas queen!” But with Taylor, it’s different. And that’s bc many still see her through a deeply sexist lens. A lens which still sees as a pretty blonde teenage girl with a cheery disposition. They read her unapologetic femininity as vapid and frivolous. It’s disgusting. Beyoncé has essentially only directed video albums, a.k.a. prolonged music videos*, and does so while collaborating with co-directors. If Adele decided to write and direct a feature that was immediately bankrolled, she would also definitely get some snark. The closest analogue to what Swift is attempting that I can think of (a hugely successful musician jumping into feature filmmaking without much experience in the industry) would be Prince, and I wouldn't say Under the Cherry Moon or Graffiti Bridge are all that respected but that came out over 30 years ago when there wasn't as much noise about those projects to begin with. Maybe Swift's film will turn out well, maybe not. The project itself will be the response for the doubt some have for her diving headfirst into filmmaking. * While directing music videos isn't nothing, it isn't the same as directing a narrative feature in most instances. The song is the crux of the storytelling, and the visuals hang on it. Beyoncé directed two of her documentaries and the movie Black is King for Disney+. Beyoncé talked about how she wanted to direct and how she learned to edit so she could edit her documentary Homecoming. She received zero hostility, and I’m glad she didn’t. Yet Taylor is met with hostility. It’s like people think she just woke one day and decided to try it without studying and learning how to do it. Bo Burnham was a popular comedian before he wrote and directed his brilliant debut movie Eighth Grade. His movie got a lot of acclaim as it deserved to, but I didn’t hear anyone say he was out of his depth or dismiss his project before even seeing it My entire point is it’s fucked up and disgusting that Taylor Swift is receiving hostility for doing what others have done before and continue to do all the time. Seems some of it is pure jealousy bc she got her project bankrolled

Seems some of it is pure jealousy bc she got her project bankrolled The only thing I noticed against her was the weird inclusion of Taylor Swift into the directors on directors talks. You have to earn a spot there with at least one halfway successful movie, and I think there was a lot of hostility towards some musician directing a music video, and suddenly getting in for that. It seemed like a publicity move. Then she announces that she's directing a new movie, and there's a certain sense that she is getting this job because of her money and reputation instead of skill. I don't care about her either way, and I say that if she wants to direct a movie, go for it. But I do understand why some people jumped on a hate train.
