I am struggling to understand why. Here's a history lesson for those in the dark: the English invented the word "Soccer" back in the late 19th century. Back in those days, you had Association Football and Rugby Football. In order to differentiate between the two, Association Football got shortened to "Soccer". Basically the shorter version of the word "Association". The word "Soccer" was stopped being used by the British only about 30 years ago. Can somebody explain why it is wrong to call "Association Football" soccer? Is it purely because Americans used their word to describe College Football and the NFL?

In Italy, the word is "calcio" . The team I root for is called Juventus Football Club, other Italian teams use the words Calcio or Football in their official names. The word "soccer" doesn't exist here.

It's because it's yet another attempt of cultural supremacy by Americans.
