Netflix will be releasing this epic anti-war German film on October 28th, 2022. It is both a remake of the 1930 Best Picture winning film and a book adaption. Germany submitted the film as their entry for the Best International Feature Oscar category. Edward Berger directed the movie and co-wrote the screenplay with Ian Stokell and Lesley Paterson. Daniel Brühl stars as Matthias Erzberger, a real-life German writer and politician.
Set during World War One, the film follows a young soldier Paul Bäumer (Felix Kammerer) going through the horrors of war.
The reviews, while limited, have been quite good. 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. 8.1/10 from IMDB. Gold Derby has the picture ranked 17th on their Best Picture list. The buzz seems to be getting stronger and stronger.
What do you guys think of its chance? Its got big shoes to fill. The original won Best Picture and Best Director, and scored nominations for Cinematography and Writing.

This is the real question mark of the season. I think with the right campaign it could hit big with Picture, Director, Cinematography, Sound, Production Design, Costumes, Editing. If Netflix puts their backs into it, it really could be a hit.

It is all about how HARD Netflix will be pushing this. I know we have Glass Onion as a player here.

the fact that it's Germany's IFF submission is already going to go partway towards keeping it in the conversation because it's probably a lock in that category, and if it can get an IFF nod expanding outwards should be doable.
at the very least it's getting an IFF nod, so yes it will Oscar.

It definitely helped out with Cold War, Worst Person in the World and Drive My Car. I don't think DMC would have made it under the 5 picture system or the "6-10 if gets X percentage of #1 votes" system.
Decision to Leave is another one we'll probably be talking about in a couple of months.

This reminds me I really gotta watch the original before this new one comes out, especially after I just visited the Imperial War Museum in Manchester earlier today. Been towards the top of my watchlist for a long time. The trailer for the remake looks absolutely brutal, just as any World War I film aiming to capture the reality of that war should be

Ever since the first reactions I was getting foreign director nod vibes. Not sure about Picture. Really depends how much effort Netflix puts into it. A few techs seem probably. Adapted screenplay is a complete wasteland so you never know.

I still think Ostlund and Park are more likely than Berger.

IFF and maybe like a couple of techs. Now that I've seen the film, I hope it gets more than this, but sadly I doubt it. Not sure Netflix gives that much of a shit.

I'm predicting International Film, Sound and Makeup at this point.

I still think it can get a BP nom, and in a chaos universe where there’s no consensus around a winner, even the win. It certainly deserves it. Brühl not gonna get his nom tho

This is the real question mark of the season. I think with the right campaign it could hit big with Picture, Director, Cinematography, Sound, Production Design, Costumes, Editing. If Netflix puts their backs into it, it really could be a hit. That is exactly what happened. 9 Oscar nominations, 14 BAFTA nominations. It is also very popular on Netflix right now. Audience scores are pretty high here.
The only thing it really missed here was Director, Editing, and the two performances from Felix Kammerer and Albrecht Schuch.
Job well done for the accurate prediction. The film ended up blooming at the right time too.
