I always like this topic so I’m just going to make it once and bump it throughout the year. Right now I’ll say…

Same as you OP, though I'd swap out Maverick for Babylon until the latter screens. In fact, if Babylon enters the top 5, I'd probably knock out Banshees first. Maverick is almost certainly in the top 5.

Maybe but I’m kind of feeling like if they could snub The Dark Knight for The Reader and Frost/Nixon when TDK had an acting winner I’m not sure they would go for Maverick. Feels like the exact movie they expanded for.

Movies like The Reader and Frost/Nixon seem to be the exact kinds of things getting dragged at this year's festivals. Maybe I'm naïve but the Weinstein brand of dull period piece Oscar bait seems completely out of vogue now.

Maybe I'm naïve but the Weinstein brand of dull period piece Oscar bait seems completely out of vogue now. Even if those kind of movies are out of vogue I think their tastes have shifted more towards the smaller, stranger more critically acclaimed movies with acclaimed writing (like Banshees or EEAAO) and not towards blockbusters. Also doesn’t help that we have two other potentially huge blockbusters on deck waiting to possibly steal its thunder (Avatar, Black Panther). It feels like the way to Best Picture contention these days is through the writing categories and not the techs.
