Which of these "transformative" performances by a young American actor - i.e. "becoming" an icon of popular culture - did you prefer?

I mean, it's easily Stewart but she's really helped by the film around her which on many occasions chooses to simply focus on her face.
I gotta admit that Butler's performance is fading in my mind a little bit but at the same time I acknowledge that it's mainly because the movie doesn't give him too many chances to just own the screen by himself. This reminds me of my reaction to Christian Bale in Vice - I know that what these actors are doing in their respective films is really good but I kind of have to search for it in the sea of cuts, segues and other minutiae. Stewart is the star of Spencer. The star of Elvis is Baz Luhrmann.
But even with all that in mind it's still unquestionably Stewart for me due to the power of her acting. I really appreciate Butler's turn but it's not something that I gravitate too much towards.

Butler's performance is just much more commanding. Almost everything in Stewart's movie is better than she is. Spall was my MVP to be honest.

I mean, it's kind of unfair to compare them because Stewart dominates her film so thoroughly, whereas Butler is relegated to the sidelines so much in his own movie to an almost frustrating degree. I don't even hate the Hanks of it all like a lot of people do, and I think it's a fascinating way to frame a biopic when done correctly... but I just feel like Baz didn't let Butler dig into the meat of Elvis as a man. I wanted so much more from him, and it's not even his fault. I think there is an awards-worthy performance to be found here if Luhrmann had just reframed the story or at least allowed the film to breathe a little.

stephen - In terms of their "technical" acting, though - did you ever get the sense that you were actually watching Diana and/or Elvis? I definitely did.

Not really for either, but that's the problem one runs into when they're playing someone with such an iconic, unique appearance. It's why we've not had a truly convincing physical portrayal of Nixon on-screen, because no one looks like Richard Nixon but Richard Nixon. I don't think Stewart or Butler, in character, looked like the real-life people, but I don't dock them points for that. I know I'm watching an interpretation, not a documentary.
