Oh honey, the shocking thing about the story is the other woman. Where is the solidarity for their situation?

I also stand with the women of Iran. No one should ever be forced to wear a face covering that they don’t want to wear

I've already voiced my feelings elsewhere on social media, but seeing this thread, I came in here to express my support too. Awful what was done to this young woman. #justiceformahsaamini. All the vigorous protests going on are heartening to see.

When people would try to downplay the hijab thing in the past with "it's their culture!" stuff they are not getting that women are legit getting the shit kicked out of them or even killed over it in these countries. It's not like here where if you walked down the street topless the worst you'd get is fined if a cop happened to be around and everyone would probably just ignore you.

Because that's a big difference. I do know where you're coming from a bit though. The "it's their culture" line ignores how shitty some cultures can be, especially to women. Hopefully the virality of these protests tamps down on that line of thought. People don't want to live in theocratic patriarchal dictatorships.

I've heard people outright defend laws mandating it in the middle east saying it's not any different from women having to cover their breasts in the west which as I noted above is missing the point.

That sounds crazy. Even if you want to go along with that line of thinking, I would ask those people to then tell me if there is no difference in the way those mandates are enforced. I think a lot of women over here get caught up in our Western World problems and we forget the feminists that have been over there ready, willing, and actually dying behind fighting for rights. It goes far beyond the problems we have. This is a reminder of that. Also, Iran is a Muslim majority country (99%). A majority of the country (3/4, I last read) are very against the mandate - and the number opposed has been growing over time. The culture is supporting choice. This is about the morality police over there.

The fact this isn’t really getting as much media coverage in the US as it probably should tells you this is a legit grassroots uprising of the people and not some CIA funded color revolution. Good for the people of Iran
