It is about time. Why did it take them 50 years?
Here is the story: In 1973, Marlon Brando refused to attend the Oscars. He felt that Native Americans were being mistreated by the Hollywood film industry. After Brando won for The Godfather, Littlefeather came onto stage on the behalf of Brando and refused to accept the Oscar. Now 50 years later -- you heard that right -- the Academy via David Rubin apologized for how she was treated by the audience, the press, and the broadcast.
What is your viewpoint on what happened? Should the Academy apologized for other things they have done in the past, beyond picking How Green Was My Valley over Citizen Kane or Chariots of Fire over Raiders of the Lost Ark.

This should be commemorated by she and Will Smith being allowed to run on stage and disrupt the next ceremony together. "Keep her Indian tribe, THE FUCK out of your movie!" John Wayne and Clint Eastwood should be cancelled. You're trolling, but when did Eastwood westerns ever have negative Indian depictions? Unless it's an early one I haven't seen. They either weren't featured or it was a positive depiction that made it clear the soldiers wanting to "tame" the west were the bad guys like in Outlaw Josie Wales. |

Ehh if they went 50 years without responding (as far as I'm aware) to her, Brando, or the public response to this, I think an apology is more than valid. Of course, Clint should also be picking up his phone, as should many others. |

Why? The Academy shouldn't apoligize for that, she was a moron.-
However Hollywood should apologized for not giving roles to her for being blacklisted, in case that affirmation was true.- Many people were blacklisted for all the wrong reasons, specially women. From Lynne Friederick to Gina Carano.-
Because men usually started older and their career are longer their careers could be recouvered.-
Tabloids were specially hard with Friederick, when Sellers widow, died the tabloids said that she died because of suicidade or alcoholism, and only 6 people attended to her funeral. When in real life her mother defended her daugther a couple of years later. Telling she died of natural causes and she didn't want a public funeral.-
Even Sonja Henie blacklist, needs a revision.-
Apparently other big stars from the 40s and 50s made something equally awful, or even worse, but because there wasn't a photo with the füherer, weren't blacklisted.- |

Why? she continue working until now and receive a couple of Oscar nom after her win.- Redgrave was lucky, Gina Carano for a more childish thing was blacklisted by Spielberg and Kat Kennedy.- Previously Spielberg blacklisted Megan Fox.- I don't think the Academy should apologize of anything, it's an institution about awards. Maybe the producers of that year show, but the Academy not. Maybe the Hollywood Actors Syndicate should apologized for not defending her. But ultimately, I don't think she ever care. Specially when one of the boos probably came from her own sister.- |

They can't control their asshole members in the moment, sure, but they could well have put out a statement in support of Littlefeather's right to speak her piece that night, or the next night, or any night thereafter for half a century. And they didn't. They let it fester for fifty fucking years, during which time she was a veritable punching-bag and laughingstock. No one rallied to her defense. And it happened on the Academy's watch. They knew she was going to accept on Brando's behalf. They knew what she was going to say was likely going to have some sort of a negative impact. And they just let it play out. The known boo-ers are mostly dead. There's Eastwood (who I don't know if he booed but he did make a crass remark on it, which has been singled out in recent years), but most of them are dead and to just simply name and shame them doesn't make much of a difference because they're dead. But the Academy is a living entity in itself, and they owe it to Littlefeather to give her an apology. Maybe it's late, but better late than never as the adage goes. |

It should also be noted that Littlefeather's acceptance speech is the reason why the Academy enforces a mandate to this day that if a winner is not present to accept, the presenter accepts it on their behalf -- Heath Ledger being the exception. (As a side-note: the Academy refused to allow Peter Finch's widow accept on his behalf and intended for Paddy Chayefsky to accept it in his stead, but he said fuck that and had Eletha Finch come up with him and give a speech. William Friedkin was the director of the ceremony that year and has stood by the Academy's initial decision, which he says was because he didn't want a weeping widow on the stage, but it's clear the real reason was because it was 1977 and Finch's wife was black. No apology from the Academy on that front.)
So yeah, the Academy still has reverberating effects from Littlefeather's speech in its existing history to this day, and it needs to acknowledge them. It doesn't absolve them of anything, but at least it's a step in the right direction (again, half a century too late).

Why? most are dead, or dating that German Guy (Alzheimer).- The dead people, who can't defense or argue in their favor, should rest in peace.- The 70s was a very rude decade, with lot of violence, that's maybe inaceptable in 2022, but that boo was more than OK in 1972.- I think that blacklist Sacheen Littlefeather was more harmed than just a boo at the Oscars.- |

ok I retract what I said earlier. It is their place to apologize and I didn't realize the extent to which they gave her a hard time or about the rule change after the fact either which sent a clear message that she wasn't welcome there. I still say fuck the boo-ers. What scumbags. Littlefeather was incredibly brave to go up there.
