Let's settle this once and for all. IMDb and Letterboxd usually list a film's release under the very first year it was shown, but traditionally we've only allowed films from the first non-festival release date. Some people have done Oscar qualifications as the proper release year, but I find that too many films never got an Oscar qualifying run for that to be viable.
So the question is: should we go with the very first showing of the movie, or the first non-festival showing? I personally like going with the first ever showing because (a.) it's a lot less work to figure out, and (b.) edge cases like The Amusement Park (first festival showing in 1975, first non-festival showing in 2021) aren't left in limbo.
Okay, I think we've had enough votes. The first non-festival, public showing of the movie is what we're going with. By this metric, Perfect Blue is eligible for 1998 (which probably makes it my #1 by default). I'm not sure what else is eligible/ineligible at the moment.
