Cool. Looking forward to your awards albums ... if you are still doing them I'm working on a massive overhaul of all lineups and all videos from 1915 to present. I promise it will all be worth it in the end, but it is a herculean undertaking.

some best picture recommendations: The Hole (Tsai Ming-liang) an anomaly within Tsai's filmography, it could be classified as a musical Buffalo '66 (Vincent Gallo) indulgent and depressing but still love it An Autumn Tale (Éric Rohmer) best of the series, playful, elegantly shot, makes an interesting contrast with the lady in question Eternity and a Day (Theo Angelopoulos). I found the kid in this movie insuferable (wise beyond his years, blah blah blah) but pushes the story to its full potential. Plenty of images to analyze Run Lola Run (Tom Tykwer) a nice closure to the mtv era

LOL I actually nominated Run Lola Run for 1999 but didn't realize she wasn't eligible then. So I guess I'll have to remember to resubmit her.
Oh, and don't forget about LISA KUDROW, The Opposite of Sex for supporting actress.

I'll need to see that one before submitting my ballot. As a huge fan of both actresses (especially Griffiths), this is a huge blind spot for me. But it's difficult to find it online. If anyone can help, please PM me. FYCs: American History X, The Truman Show and Central Station in every possible category. Question: Should we consider Life is Beautiful for this year, or for 1997? It was released in Italy in 1997, but in the US only in 1998.

I'm calling Life Is Beautiful for 1997, since its first non-festival release was in that year. A lot of movies never even got a Hollywood release and they are worthy of being awarded. I'm gonna start a poll to work out eligibility issues, because it is going to get more and more confusing if these awards continue. As for the other part of your message: A messenger parrot may or may not have arrived on your ship, matey. Arrrrr.

Three weeks left! If you have any interest, send in a ballot. Otherwise, The Waterboy may just be an AMARA nominee for best picture after all

1. No. It released publicly in 1997, just not in the U.S. 2. Absolutely! Direct to video is also fine (and one DTV even has showed up on a ballot or two )

I'm moving the deadline to November 8. This will allow one more week for people to get votes in, and it's election day in the States so people can have an extra reminder to vote.

Does anyone know where I can watch An Autumn Tale with subtitles?

Question for those who have seen Hilary and Jackie: we can all agree that Griffiths is lead, right? And that she's no less deserving of a nomination than Watson?
It was interesting reading about this film, and how it was adapted from Hilary's book whose first title was "A Genius in the Family", and then was changed to "Hilary and Jackie". I don't know if Hilary du Pré was trying to call some of that attention to herself, and not have it focused exclusively on her (obviously more talented) sister, but this doesn't change the fact that the film focuses equally on both women, and that both of them are played by two amazing actresses who deliver great and haunting work. The only explanation I can find for the category fraud is that the studio and/or the Academy wanted to make sure that both would get in, so they campaigned them in different categories. Yes, it would be a shame if one got in and not the other, but then again, we have seven slots to fill in, not five.

Does anyone know where I can watch An Autumn Tale with subtitles? I actually think I watched it on Prime but it was only there temporarily. I watched a ton of Rohmers on ok.ru but it's looking like the user who uploaded them in good quality with subtitles is gone. He uploaded hundreds of obscure non-English films. currently Autumn Tale doesn't look like it's available to stream or rent anywhere...

The Barber of Siberia is the best movie of the year and I would like to thank The Movie Sinner for recommending it.
Y'all have one week left to get ballots in and stuff Barber into every available category.
(Note: I'm counting Barber as 1998, as IMDb lists it as having a "premiere" in '98. It is hard to tell whether this premiere fits our rules, so in absence of any evidence that it doesn't, I will allow the film.)

Already started working on mine, but I'm trying to find some time to watch one last film before submitting my ballot. And that will be either Happiness or The Thin Red Line.

I'm doing some tallying, and I figure that I should bring this up: one particular actor is getting split straight down the middle between lead and supporting. Should I make the name public and allow for some ballot changes?
