Are you a fan of the original iteration of this show - the one that began airing in 1990 and included Chris Noth? I've been feeling nostalgic for it lately...

It's one of my comfort shows. I spent the first summer of the pandemic rewatching the Briscoe years.
Criminal Intent is also fantastic, but I can't stand SVU unless I'm watching it to take the piss out of it for its self-righteousness.
NOTE: Do not watch the revival, though. It's really, really bad.

By the way, what's your perfect L&O team?
Senior Detective: Lennie Briscoe Junior Detective: Ed Green Lieutenant: Anita Van Buren
EADA: Jack McCoy ADA: Jamie Ross (but I do have a soft spot for Serena Southerlyn, her ridiculous dismissal notwithstanding) District Attorney: Adam Schiff

stephen - I actually don't feel qualified to answer, as I don't think I've ever watched the show in "real time" - only on re-runs, and my viewing has always been sporadic. For instance, one day I'd watch one with Chris Noth, the next week one with Jerry Orbach, the week after that, one with Angie Harmon... I'd really like to start from the beginning and work my way through, but it doesn't seem like there's a streaming service that offers that at the moment...

It's definitely worth watching from the start, although I'd argue the first two seasons kind of feel completely different from the vibe/tone of the show to follow. But they are required because Chris Noth is the focus of those first few seasons and they really inform his character, and there are some really great episodes in there.
For me, however, Law & Order doesn't really become Law & Order until Jerry Orbach showed up, and then it truly clicked a season later when Sam Waterston joined.
