IrelandIreland has selected the film that will represent them at the next Oscars and with this begins the competition for the Oscar for Best International Film. An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl) is about a nine-year-old girl who is taken away from her troubled family to be cared for by relatives. To date, Ireland has not been nominated for an Oscar, although in 2016 Viva was on the shortlist.

Switzerland Switzerland has chosen as its representative for the Oscars A Piece of Sky (Drii Winter) which is about Marco and Anna who try to live a life in a community in the Alps until the disease arrives. The film received a Special Award at the Berlin Film Festival. I'd add My life as a zucchini in the animated movies category in 2017 (and it was even selected as the Swiss entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards, making the December shortlist).

Yes, exactly. My Life as a Courgette represented Switzerland at the Oscars and was not nominated, although it was on the shortlist. But if it was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Film. It is not one of the five Swiss films that have been nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film/Best International Film but it is a curious case. Another similar case occurred when France selected Persepolis in 2008 but it was not nominated but was nominated for Best Animated Film.

South Korea South Korea, which has impressed us in recent years with film and television productions, has chosen Decision To Leave as the representative for the next Oscars. The plot is about a detective who investigates the death of a man and then begins to relate to the suspect: the dead man's wife. Decision to Leave was presented at the last Cannes Film Festival where Park Chan-wook received the award for Best Director. This is the first time that a film directed by Park Chan-wook will represent his country at the Oscars. South Korea has only been nominated once at the Oscars but it is none other than Parasite which won the Oscar for Best International Film and made history by becoming the first non-English film to win the Oscar for Best Picture.

Crazy that this is the first time they're picking Park. Not really surprising. Korea is extremely prudish and homophobic. They would never pick something super out there like The Handmaiden or Oldboy.

TaiwanTaiwan has selected the film that will go to the Oscar for them and it is Goddamned Asura. The plot follows various reports of strange murders, one of which is an 18-year-old who unexpectedly shoots several people one night for no apparent reason. Taiwan has been nominated three times in this category, interestingly all films directed by Ang Lee: The Wedding Banquet, Eat Drink Man Woman, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, the latter won the Oscar in 2001.

UruguayUruguay on this occasion becomes the first Latin American country to select its representative film for the next Oscars. El empleado y el patrón (The Employer and the Employee) and the film is about two men, one an employee the other a boss, who are pressured to make money and support their families. Then the tragedy occurs. The film is starring by Cesar Winner Nahuel Pérez Biscayart (120 battements per minute) Uruguay has an interesting trivia in this category. In 1992 A Place in the World directed by Adolfo Aristarain was not chosen to represent Argentina at the Oscars. So the director convinced the Cinematheque of Uruguay to have his film represent Uruguay. The film was nominated for an Oscar but a complaint alerted the Academy that the Uruguayan film was actually Argentine, which caused the disqualification of the film although it was not replaced (leaving only four nominated films) Officially Uruguay has never been nominated for an Oscar.

The first time I heard about this film was last week.- Nahuel Pérez Biscayart is a great argentine actor, still relative young.- And that's was a true story. But I guess a tricky one, for example in 1975 Cote DI'Vory won an oscar for a french film. And France won also one for Algeria for Z. So an cinematic important country could make any kind of fraud, but a little one not. Any way I don't think Un Lugar en el Mundo is an Uruguayan film (the only uruguayan thing was that the wife of the director who was also the screen writter, and one fo the producers the now powerful Mariela Besuievsky). Still uruguayan guys received oscar nomination and even a wins in the past.-

Germany The German representative for the next Oscars has been chosen and it is All Quiet on the Western Front adaptation of the novel of the same name written by Erich Maria Remarque and that deals with the experience of a young soldier whose enthusiasm disappears when he faces the horrors of World War I. The film stars the great Daniel Brühl. And it was already made into a movie in 1930 with the version that won 2 Oscars including Best Picture. Germany is one of the most successful countries in the category of Best International Film with 19 nominations (counting the nominations since the unification of the two Germany and the nominations received by West Germany) and has won three Oscars: The Tin Drum (1980) Nowhere in Africa (2003) and The Lives of Others (2007)

Canada Canada chose its representative for the next Oscars and it can be said that it is a surprise or maybe not. This is the animated documentary Eternal Spring which tells the story of the comic book artist Daxiong and China's persecution of the Falun Gong spiritual group that led to his immigration to Canada. It is the first time that Canada has chosen a documentary or an animated film to represent them at the Oscars. Although this has become commonplace. Let us remember the cases of animated documentaries such as Waltz with Bashir (Israel) Flee (Denmark) or the documentary Honeyland (North Macedonia) all nominated. Will Eternal Spring get the nomination? Canada has achieved 7 nominations in this category, winning once with The Barbarian Invasions (2004)
