Here We Go!!
Our second poll of the season, let us see what August has in store for us.
It's still early in the process and we are still learning about the contenders, but month by month a clearer picture is coming into place though.
Let's have fun and thanks for voting!!!

At the start of the month, Tar. Gut feeling (which has never served me well before). I'll evaluate my options again after Venice.

At this point it makes sense. On paper it looks like a good one to choose!!

Good choice! With Apple+ behind it I think it could be nominated easily enough. I wonder if Apple+ can be as strong with this one as they were last year with CODA. On paper they should fine, but we shall see!!!

Switching from Empire of Light to The Fablemans. I feel like they're gonna give Spielberg one more BP winner sooner or later.

I should look into it more, it sounds like it has decent momentum!!! I knew nothing about it until the 26th, and I saw "Todd Field+Cate Blanchett" and said THAT'S OUR MOVIE! I did the same thing when I found out that BlackKklansman was Spike Lee making a movie about a black undercover cop in a white supremacist organization, and that one did a decent job of holding out. It's too bad that the movie wasn't very good; if I had seen it at the time of release, I would have realized that it wasn't nearly angry or insightful enough to win. I'm not some big Field Fan. I thought Little Children was lousy and In the Bedroom was... okay, that was pretty great. But making a comeback film with Blanchett after we got a glorified Disney channel movie with good acting winning last year, I feel that things will swing darker and more artistic this time. Nothing to back this up at all, it's just my feeling.

I’m sticking with Women Talking for now. It seems to be the more pedigreed of the two feminist films and Sarah Polley is very respected.
The Fableman’s going to Toronto made me consider picking it. I feel like the time to build buzz and potentially win the audience award could help.

by the way if Academy voters are reading Polley's book of essays Run Towards the Danger that is definitely going to help her.

Uhhhhh, who is voting for Amsterdam??? David O. Russell is going to have serious problems after that sexual molestation thing. Sure, it is possible - Green Book still won with the controversies around its writer - but that is a major hurdle to jump.

If they think Amsterdam is a great film, they are going to reward it. The poster probably picked Russell's film because of his track record (and overdue nature) at the Oscars and the impressive ensemble cast.

Not insurmountable, but if it has competition in movies like She Said, there will be a lot of ill will against it.

This happened over 10 years ago.

My bad if this was ages ago and nobody gave a shit back then. Far less likely to be factor in that case.

Personally I think the "overdue" logic is full of holes. See Glenn Close, Peter O'Toole and Annette Benning (got Swanked twice) as examples.

Getting nominated 3 times in 12 years does not constitute someone being overdue, that term gets used way too flippantly. Also maybe lets just wait until the person who voted for Amsterdam actually gives their own argument instead of just trying to guess what they're thinking.

I just don't buy the concept that the Academy cares about his past. Are you going with Babylon here? I am sticking with She Said until TIFF makes their annual pick.
