lol This is almost certainly a flop. It’s been in limbo since 2019, went through several rounds of reshoots and just sold off by A24. I wonder what went wrong and how bad it can be?

When has a J-Law led movie ever really gone right? Like, SLP was Cooper's movie. Hustle was Bale's. Joy was terrible. Mother was terrible. Passengers was terrible. Don't Look Up was decent, but Leo's movie. So...maybe the first Hunger Games? She clearly has very bad taste for projects, ratifying my very mean dismissals of her a decade ago.

He was the lead, clearly from my point of view. She was a supporting love interest, the main one, but the movie revolved around him IMO. As for the acclaim...whatever. Cooper and De Niro were easily better. Blanchett won an Oscar for her cringy work in The Aviator. Shit happens.

I think J-Law's early 10's stardom was overrated by a lot of people in hindsight. Hunger Games and X-Men were IP's, SLP was a one off that just really connected with people at the time. American Hustle had Bale fresh off Batman and an Oscar win. It's not like the movies were just star vehicles for her and she was the one opening them. She eventually got those with things like Joy, Passengers, and Red Sparrow, but the results were not the same.

It wasn't overrated, it's just that she was EVERYWHERE, with everything written about her all about how down to Earth and girl next door she was, and eventually people got tired from overexposure. Doesn't help she was Razzie worthy in the X-men movies and clearly didn't want to be there, and the Russell movies didn't age well (though I never liked them to begin with).

was pegging this as a contender a few months ago. You have an independent A24 drama with a baity premise about PTSD and mental health headlined by Tyree Henry and Lawrence, but I didn't know the release had been so troubled, and now it's been renamed to something really forgettable and sold off to Apple... Not a good sign

I agree it’ll flop commercially and possibly critically. But didn’t that happen with Joy and she still got an Oscar nom? Personally she didn’t deserve an Oscar nom for that but the academy clearly loves her

Days of movies making as much money as IPS are over and have been over But box office wise: - Joy had $60 million budget and grossed $101 million worldwide - Passengers: $110 million budget and grossed $303 million worldwide - Red Sparrow: $69 million budget and grossed $151 million worldwide So clearly even her less acclaimed movies made money. Even Mother! made more than than the budget with $44 million worldwide with a $30 million budget

Don't Look Up was decent, but Leo's movie. So...maybe the first Hunger Games? She clearly has very bad taste for projects, ratifying my very mean dismissals of her a decade ago. I mean even when I was a OG critic of JLaw and thought she was insanely overrated, I never doubted that she was a draw because people loved her as an actress and celebrity SLP was not Cooper’s movie. Yeah he was the lead, but she became the star and It Girl because of it. She was co-lead/supporting depending on how you see it. People described her as a scene stealer. Same with American Hustle which was NOT Bale’s movie. It was an all-star ensemble and marketed as such. She was once again stealing scenes. When I watched it in theater, the audience LOVED her. Don’t Look Up was not Leo’s movie either. It’s an ensemble movie, and you know it lol Mother is seen as terrible because of the subject matter which was extremely controversial, not because she was terrible in it. That was her best performance since Winter’s Bone But her movies post-Oscar win that weren’t IPs like The Hunger Games and X-Men were financially successful including the bad ones like Joy. Even Mother broke even. Passengers did extremely well despite it’s huge budget LOL man if someone told me 10 years ago, I’d be defending Jennifer Lawrence with my whole chest, I would’ve had the best laugh of the year. I couldn’t stand her and the hype around her even more. Thankfully I saw the light 🙏

Even Mother! made more than than the budget with $44 million worldwide with a $30 million budget Worldwide box office against budget isn't the way to gauge if a movie made money. The production budget doesn't factor in marketing costs and studios don't get all of those box office receipts. In America, studios get a bigger chunk of the box office in the first weeks of release while theaters get more on the back-end; the rule of thumb is to take whatever a movie made domestically and assume half of that went back to the studios. Overseas, it's all over the place how much of the box office the studios get. So all those films you listed likely lost money in their theatrical run ( mother! definitely did) and if they broke-even at any point that came from later rental sales, home video, and selling off streaming rights.

Oh wow my bad. I didn’t know that about worldwide and assumed marketing would be part of the budget. All these years, I just assumed it was accounted for. Oops Is there a way to find out how much marketing cost and what sales were like post-theatrical run for a movie

Oops Is there a way to find out how much marketing cost and what sales were like post-theatrical run for a movie Studios are usually pretty tight-lipped on the full ancillary costs and receipts of a film so they can get around their contractual obligations ( the whole "net profits" issue) but you can use The Numbers website to find some reports of the home market performance ( here's Red Sparrow for example). Streaming and other ancillary profits are hard to come by, though.

I'd only wish her and Tyree well with this project.

Doesn't TIFF take virtually anything? This could be The Godfather or The Room, or anything in between.

Getting decent reviews, but doesn't look like an awards player.

Getting decent reviews, but doesn't look like an awards player. I agree. I think when it releases widely, it’ll be talked about and get good reviews (Jen and BTH are getting raves for their performances), but ultimately it’s not going to be an awards player. Jen might get a Golden Globe nomination though. HFPA adores her

Look man, I'm a big fan of her best work and not just that, I stick up for her all the time, even going back to the MAR days and sexually desire her to such an extent that some wackjob called me "thirsty" on MAR - yeah, pretty much, the wackjob was right - but if I see the thing where a character obviously going through something "emotional" emerges from water into the light to show her "triumph" over it or something plebby like that........like happens at the end of this trailer, I'mmina stab myself in the f'n face
